Happened to be at the uni today and picked up a brochure on Anxiety Disorders. It describes ASD (acute stress disorder) happening to people after distressing or traumatic events.
Symptoms include:
1) dreams, flashbacks or intrusive thoughts
2) anxiety in situations that remind them of the event
3) avoiding situations that remind them of the event
4) emotional numbness, detachment
5) depression
This reminded me of an experience I had at work where I was suddenly 'put on the spot'. I couldn't speak, move or think and I ended up failing miserably in front of a large number of people. Afterwards, I had all the symptoms listed above and fell into quite a severe depression which lasted about a month. Looking back, I can remember similar events which other people would consider 'everyday' which led to a kind of post traumatic stress.
Do you think people with ASD (as in autism) can get ASD (as in acute stress disorder) from everyday events which 'normal' people would get over in a few minutes?
