Can you stop yourself from your interests? Can you avoid engaging in them altogether?

I can avoid them for a time, but then my mind is still doing them and thinking about them. Sewing, certain people and past events haunt me. Has anyone figured out how to avoid this or is this a holy grail of being normal, to where you aren't so controlled by these things? If I didn't have other obligations, these drives wouldn't be a problem and I wouldn't feel guilty for them. But I can really only do one thing at a time and when my mind is constructing something or thinking about something, it interferes with talking and listening and doing whatever menial task I need to be doing. So, I get irritable a lot.

Do you have this and have you found any effective ways to stop it?

It is very hard. I try to do things with my hands, like crafts. I usually only think about the crafts and not the people and things that happened.

It's hard in that I make connections with things that happened in the present that things that happened in the past. Then I get even more aggravated.

For me the only thing that works is distraction - such as being busy at work, going out with friends, etc. I will still think about them some, but I won't have the time to think about them all that much.

The only time I completely lose interest in my special interests is when I'm deeply depressed and I don't even want to bother getting out of bed.
