Went to the grocery today- outside my normal "no grocery before 9pm rule". It did not go well. I mean, it doesn't tend to go well after 9pm either, but it does go a bit better. I am not able to full grocery shopping, because I find a cart and navigating around people to be too overwhelming. So, it's whatever I need ASAP and can fit into a basket/my other hand.

Today seemed to be particularly overwhelming for one reason or another. I had two carry something in my other hand along with the basket, except I'm kind of awkward when it comes to these kinds of things. I'm not sure if I actually look awkward while trying to balance and not drop what's in my hands, but it does feel uncomfortable and awkward. I also only do self-checkout. The only checkout that was open happened to have the "open" light turned off on it, so I waited and wasn't sure if I could use it. I started walking over to it and the worker that was overseeing the self-checkouts did nod to me as if it was OK, but then he proceeded to come over to the check out. He said that I could go ahead and get started, but I nervously stared at him because I didn't know what he was doing. He was just turning on the "open" light.

I hurried as fast as I could, went to put my basket back, and then as I turned around the worker previously mentioned said something to get my attention, I turned around, and he nicely said "Have a good day." I stared for a few seconds, slightly nodded (not sure if this actually was noticeable, but I did try), and quickly left. I felt guilty over it the entire car ride home. Does anybody else feel guilt when it comes to inappropriate mishaps? The inappropriate thing I am referring to here is that I essentially ignored the worker who was just trying to be helpful and friendly.

I think I'm going have my mother go grocery shopping for me again in the future and stick to drug stores for things that I can get there instead, because I'm tired of being overstimulated by the grocery.

Sometimes I randomly remember times when I've screwed up socially, and I will feel a wave of guilt and embarrassment just from remembering it. I've done a lot of stuff like that in the past, I wish I could just erase that stuff fun my memory.

Yes, I definitely have issues with this. Except when it comes to memories, I feel more guilty about letting younger self down and putting younger me into embarrassing situations that would have been avoidable. I will still have flashes of memories from first grade that will make me feel awful.

Your 19 I am 40 I have 21 years of extra memory to deal with.

Forget the guilt it will do you no good.

It is ok to be a bit selfish.

Look at how people treat each other fights murders and domestic violence.

If social gaffs is all your guilty about in this twisted world just say **** it.

We have a tendency to over Annalise things this is an autistic trait you want to work on while your 21 don't wait until your 40.

I am sure the bullies who made my life HELL don't suffer from guilt why should we go on a guilt trip for our blind unintentional social gaffs?

Yeah, a store worker encounters hundreds of people a day. No matter how weird or rude you are, he's seen weirder. :) That's not a reason to be rude, just to not beat up yourself over the thing that much.

OP one trait on the spectrum is brutal honesty if you don't want it don't read past this line stop reading now but I guarantee it will be to your benefit if you take on board my message.

You remind me of me and for your soft guilt and worry I give you a proverbial slap.

Your hyper focusing on this non incident get you butt down to the store again the experience can only get better unless the store is help us and you are taken hostage.

The only way you can learn to do things right is by being not afraid to make mistakes.

The worker you  essentially ignored  I can tell you one thing he will not be going onto an online forum to try and put is horrific ordeal into perspective. :P

I have faux pas like this happen to me all the time. I have stared at store workers for a little bit while processing what they said before responding or walking away. LOL, I didn't even think anything of these occurances until you mentioned it!

The above posters are right - the worker has seen stranger and will not have to process what you did. He probably has already forgotten.

I, too, have terrible memories of embarrassments of the past.

Thank you for the advice, but my issues with the grocery comes from sensory issues (the social aspect today doesn't tend to happen, thankfully) and I'm not sure if anything is really going to calm that down. Have already tried repeated exposure throughout the past month or so as the grocery duties have fallen to me, but the sensory issues I experience with it seem to only be getting worse.

I've just returned home from my evening trip to the shop it's nearly 11pm now.
I find after years of embarrassing myself in shops it is easier to have a selection of 10-15 different ones I do my shopping at in rotation.
No one will remember me or at least I hope they don't.
