Sorry to post twice.

I sound eloquent and well-versed on a computer, when I am typing letters or doing posts on online forums.

In fact you wouldn't see my autism that much when I type (unless I am typing about my autism).

However when I speak, my autism is obvious apparently. Someone said that I talk very monotonously, I struggle with word finding at times, I make zero eye contact, I either ramble about a topic or I barely say a word.

I tried to ask a woman working in a shop where the baskets were and I couldn't even get that out; my support worker had to ask for me.

I can talk a bit better with people I know but strangers make me stutter and generally get word confusion.

I am verbose on a computer and can write long posts or letters. But when I talk to people about general stuff (ie not my special interests), I struggle.

Is anyone else like this?

I'm more eloquent writing than speaking, generally.

Good writing is a science, while good speaking is an art. The two aren't one in the same. People don't speak like a book reads, and books aren't written the way people speak.

There is evidence, as well, that good speaking could be a science.

Good writing is, most definitely, an art.

Plus, I feel like.. when you are on a computer, you don't have the pressure of someone(s) staring at you. You have time to contemplate what you are going to type.. whereas irl, you have to immediately be able to get out your request and then follow up with additional conversation. Completely different than being on a computer or writing on a sheet of paper.

From my writing, many are shocked because of my obvious disability.

Nope, I'm pretty bad at writing too. It takes me ages to figure out what to write in posts on forums. At times I think people think I write like a child. Some of my reports for college have all the information but the writing is quite basic, with short sentences etc. Sometimes I write well but more often than not it's pretty basic or it is a mixture. My speaking is pretty on par with my writing, not too well thought out even though I spend ages on it.

yes it's safe to say most of us share this problem it's among the most definitive autism traits.
in most social situations my brain just shuts down and even if i can come up with something appropriate to say most of the time the words don't come out or it gets simplified to the point of ambiguity and childishness.
people generally say it's not as bad with family but for me it's mostly worse as i know already that they don't expect much and anything more might receive weird reactions also they're very loud etc.

I'm typically more eloquent in written communication than in verbal. That said, I was able to survive on the phone doing tech support for a few years and that made me quicker on my feet verbally.

In real life I'm very withdrawn and practically nonverbal.

On my internet forums I give advice, give opinions, chat, joke around, and am a popular kid! :D

My internet posts are usually very long and full of needed information and void of short forms such as "LOL" for example. I would shorten my posts and e-mails if only I knew what information was not needed. When I try to post quickly or I am tired and don't want to type much people usually end up asking for clarification.

What I gain on the computer is confidence, in real life I start a lot of thoughts with horrible lines like "I don't know". I look away, repeat words, rephrase and I lose my voice a lot. Also in real life I tend to think of all of the good things to say when I review the conversation afterwards where is on the internet I have the critical few seconds or minutes to stop, read through my writing and think of those points before it is sent. It works the opposite way too as far is removing thoughts that would have been better off left unsaid or more delicately phrased. I have dealt with a lot of unnecessary trouble because I failed to communicate properly in real time.
