Today at work I got called into the office for 'breaching the social media policy' . All I did was tweet to the retailer I work for asking why the colleague discount wasn't working on a certain product, which I wanted to get my mum for Christmas. I did mention it to my manager who contacted head office about it but she didnt hear anything back about it. It was an obvious system error and I purchased it today. however I apparently bought the company into dispute over the tweet, which was a polite query. I cant understand why you cannot ask or say anything these days without the risk of it being taken out of context. Of course I was surprised by this, I felt I did do anything wrong. Now Im really worried and paranoid about everything I say to people whether its in person or on social media. I have aspergers syndrome and the easiest way for me to interact and make new friends is through facebook and twitter. I have deactivated my twitter account, because everyone can see every post you tweet, and I fear my employers are keeping a close eye on my online activity. You cant say anything these days, incase people take offence. its ridiculous :(

A tweet is a broadcast medium. This kind of question would be better asked in an email or other direct contact.

I don't think this kind of aversion to uncontrolled broadcast relating to company business (e.g. colleague discount) is anything new. Companies have been putting this kind of restriction on employees for a long time.

I don't think you have to be paranoid about everything you say, but don't use twitter or facebook to talk about work or work related (including benefits) things.

You hate what society has become? Twitter and Facebook are what society has become; the expectation that we be careful about what we say in certain contexts has always been around.
