OK , i don't know how to describe this one ....but here it is ...

since ages (since i was child i think 8O ) a strange thing that sometimes happen to me while I am in deep sleep and it usually happens at dawn ..... i am sleeping in my room then i "wake up" or better say "between wake up and sleeping" (can't find the right expression) .... I see the room!(foggy) I see my hand ! but I cannot move it or sometimes I feel that i can barely move it , and during this strange moments I hear nothing , I just hear the vibrations of my hammer's ear (close your ears strongly with your hands, do you sense or "hear" vibrations ?...that what i hear in these semi-unconscious moments ) I try desperately to my hand like i am saying to myself "i want to move my hand maybe i wake up from this! " .....after few moments (minutes?seconds?) ...I wake up normaly .

Even tho this weird thing happens to me infrequently:once per weak or per 2 weaks or even sometimes once per month , but i remember that it always happened to me (rarely) since i was very young or even child. I tried to described to my parents and they found it weird ....they told me it might be caused by stress or something.

It just happened to me before yesterday after about 2 months of nothing.

any idea what's the hell is this? :S

What you describe PRECISELY matches a phenomenon I have heard of. I forget the name, but it is one of the theories of alien abduction. Some people sometimes partially wake up with foggy vision an odd feeling, and inability to move, and some later believe the vage memory is one of an alien abduction. It is harmless, but do some research and you may find more detail. BTW It is not merely some dumb theory. They have taken affected people, and watched them while they have slept, etc....

This happens to me occasionally. Probably about once every six months or so. One time, it was so incredibly intense, that I was afraid to go to sleep for a while. I woke up to a bright, sunny morning, but found I couldn’t move. I could move my eyes, but that was it. Even though I could see my room, it felt like my eyes were closed because I was trying to will them open. My arms and legs were paralyzed. I tried yelling out but couldn’t open my mouth. I made a strangled sort of sound in my throat. I tried and tried to move, and eventually I sort of kicked my legs against the bed over and over really hard – it made this loud rumbling sound and then someone out in the hallway yelled “earthquake!” plain as day. I tried screaming again, but still couldn’t get out more than a strangled whine. I don’t know how long this lasted, but it felt like an eternity. When I finally woke up for real, I actually sat bolt upright and started grasping at the wall to make sure everything was real. I was sharing a room with my sister at the time, and I asked if she heard me yelling or stamping my legs, and she looked at me really strange and said she hadn’t noticed a thing.

There is another phenomenon called hypnogogy, that can be similar. It’s probably centred in the same part of the brain. It’s basically a hallucination (either auditory, visual, or both) that happens in between sleep and waking. It happens most commonly at night while falling asleep, or in the morning during waking. You basically dream while still being somewhat aware that you are in your bed.

Edit to add: just read the Wiki link and see that the two ARE connected.

They used to call this "Old Hag" in the old days. It's quite an interesting phenomena. As someone else mentioned, it's also called sleep paralysis. This used to happen to be several times a month in my teens and early 20s. It happens less and less frequently as I get older. My mother, uncle and my grandmother get this, too. My grandmother is religious, and thinks that it's something demonic and won't talk about it openly.

It used to scare me, but after a while, I just decided to explorer it. Instead of "resisting" (essentially, willing myself to move a limb and 'shake' myself out of it), I just drifted along with that 'out of body' sensation. You actually don't go anywhere :(

I often feel like I am falling when I am trying to get to sleep.

A couple of times I have woken up to see a person in the room.

I got sleep paralysis once, only I didn't feel paralyzed, I just saw something in my room. It looked like this evil energy above and in front of me about a meter wide and tall. It was terrifying. It felt evil and I could "see" it but I could see that nothing was there. I believe it was a demon (based on a later experience while awake). Not saying sleep paralysis necessarily is from demons, or at least not in all cases, but my experience with it convinced me that it was for me.

Bingo - like the others have said, that's one manifestation of sleep paralysis.

I used to have sleep paralysis regularly in my late teens and 20s. Much less so after 30.

I have had this occur only very infrequently, but the term is "hypnogogic state." Frightening! To me, it felt like I anesthesized and could not move but I was experiencing terror. I think exhaustion just exacerbates the state. I hardly ever feel this though. I have nightmares often, which is quite different. You could be having "sleep terror." I've heard that called "Old Hag" - a hypnogogic state. Sometimes during this phase incubus or sucubus fantasies are reported (scary), or alien abductions.

that happens to me, but when im falling asleep. i also hallucinate during this time.
i rather like it, and when it happens i try to be as aware of it as possible, to fully enjoy it. most times im too 'out of it' to really enjoy it.

thx for your replies , it's the first time i hear about "sleep paralysis" term .

But don't you find that it's weird that 8 persons who viewed this topic experienced such things ?? 8O

Isn't that something rare ? or it's common ?
none of my family experienced such thing except my sister that told me that she experienced it a couple of time .

Actually, I heard that almost EVERYONE has it! It is a protective measure to prevent harm during dreams. It is just that MOST aren't really aware during it, and most of the remainder have delusions or forget. As I said, this has been used to explain some alien probing claims.

Yeah, rabbits have that mechanism too, so they won't act out their dreams and get caught by a hawk. At least, that's how it was described to me and I think it's a funny way and to describe it. Every mammoth has it, including us humans, but of course nobody is supposed to wake up during the paralysis. The waking of the mind while the body is still asleep (and dreaming, thus the paralysis) is a kind of accident that surprisingly many people have.
Not that many, but more than I imagined at first. Some wake up regularly too and it seems to be somewhat chronic, and to others this only occurs one or two times. I had it two times, I felt like I was crushed, because I thought something heavy lay on me (man was I scared). Of course, we may never know how many people really wake up during sleep paralysis, because many must think this event is only a strange dream and nothing more. Especially, if they drift off to sleep after awakening instead of being, well, truly awake. However, I think those that wake during sleep paralysis are a minority.

I experience this every once in a while. I usually have hypnagogic paralysis (the type that occurs upon falling asleep.) It's also always been in the morning for me. The last time I had it, it was during a morning I was sleeping in. ("Sleeping in" is listed on the Wikipedia page as something that can trigger it). The way I describe it is "I'm awake, but it seems like I'm not actually awake at the same time."

I love Erylin's description because it reminds me of what I felt like the last time it happened to me. I, too, tried to scream, but couldn't. In my head I could hear myself screaming, but I couldn't "feel" myself screaming. Whenever I opened my eyes it took all my energy to pry them open, and I couldn't focus them on anything when they were open. I saw the room, but it was hazy. I asked my boyfriend afterwards if he had heard me screaming, and he told me "No."
