I am reminded of this scary kind of absent-mindedness when I see this Alzheimer's PSA tv commercial depicting this poor woman who loses her car keys again for the umpteenth time, and her husband finds them in the refrigerator behind a carton of coffee creamer. he reassures her with "it's ok, baby." but it is NOT OK. I have been this absent-minded ever since I could remember, even as a child. does that mean I have the same kind of thing that a senile person has? is this premature senility? is this a part of AS? or ADHD [inattentive subtype]? who else here struggles with routine memory? Obviously, I picked the ice cream first!

But...I'm somewhere between "losing stuff all the time" and "losing stuff now and then, but without it being a significant problem."

I lose stuff "now and then"--but, sometimes, it has turned into a "significant problem."

I hate looking for stuff!

I just think you're the "absentminded professor" type.

I think of myself in those terms.

I've always thought about being a professor and having all those lady students admire me.

I'd be worried about one or more of 'em bringing up a spurious accusation. my latest memory faux pas was forgetting to renew the license tags on my car.

I once heard a doctor say that Alzheimer's isn't forgetting where you put your keys....it's when you forget what keys are for.

LOL...I guess I'm thinking in pre-2000's mode LOL.

I hate all this "political correctness!"

As for the license tags--they're only parking tickets! Aren't they also "fix-it" tickets?

I think Ezra makes an excellent, illustrative point here about Alzheimers.

As for the question does it to do with AS? I would say yes. A lot of the autistic kids I've gone to school with are absent minded and have to be reminded about lots of stuff. I need little notes and pictures all over the house to remind me of stuff. I've walked out the door without pants just in my underwear because I forgot to put them on. It's really just a matter of my brain being so busy that stuff gets overlooked. I think that's a lot of as people. Busy brain processing so much stuff all the time.

I just had a possibly illustrative experience showing how my brain is malwired- I was writing a check to the credit card company, making payments towards paying down a debt. I was using my right hand [I'm a lefty but I have, since my accident, been using my right hand to write stuff out of habit and also because it helps my brain to stay younger longer] to write a check but instead of writing the installment amount as I wanted, on its own it wrote out the full amount before I could stop it, so I had to snatch the pen away from my right hand and scratch out what it just wrote and scribble in the installment amount. this tells me my corpus callosum [the thing that bridges the cerebral hemispheres] has issues. ach. :?

Sometimes I put the milk in the cupboard and the cereal in the fridge, only to realize a minute later what I did.

I know where they go, but I end up reversing it somehow. Aside from that I sometimes misplace things, but I'm 99% sure of where all my stuff is.

Until I formed the habit of everything in its place I lost hours each week looking for my phone, keys, wallet etc. I usually put something large on top of them and forget about it. I don't know why I do that but if I'm missing something the first place I check is under my handbag/coat/cushion. My memory is much worse when I'm anxious/depressed.
