I got called into the office today at my job. Currently I work the night shift at a grocery store but that is about to change. I was called into the managers office and told that my work on the night shift has been careless and sloppy. Now this is not directly related to Asperger's Syndrome. I have looked up some of the problems with working night shift and yes I have some of them if not all of them.

The biggest difficulty for me was not having much of a social life. I had been working second shift while in college. At the time I was working 32 hours a week and taking anywhere from 2 to 3 classes per quarter then semester when the university made the conversion from the quarter based system to the semester based system. I had been on that schedule from 2008 until late summer of 2013. During that time period I had practically no time to develop a social life. When I was not in class or at work I was studying, cooking my own meals, keeping my apartment as straight as possible and keeping up on my overall hygiene which was impeccable at the time.

Upon my senior year I knew that it was going to take a while before I got the job I wanted. In the meantime my overall productivity and quality of work began to slip due to boredom and burnout. The store manager put me on night shift because of this and at the time it seemed like a good idea. However my problems did not end there. I had mood swings, my sleep schedule was erratic, I began to pay less and less attention to the everyday important details in my job and out of job life and I became generally undisciplined in my day to day life.

My boredom did not stop and the immediate supervisor did not know what to do but yell at me all the time. This continued until about two days ago when I was told the co-manager in the section that I was working in that they were going to put me on day shift. Also that this is my last chance to prove that I am a good employee. Now keep in mind that I have been at this job since January of 2007 so again the Asperger's is not a direct factor here I don't think.

But on the other hand I have been doing shift work for about 6 years and I was highly motivated and disciplined to continue on with my studies. I graduated with a higher GPA in college than what I did in high school. But when I decided that after four years that I was not going to make my current job a career is when the downward hill slide started. Even though I had been doing shift work for 6 years is this a general maturity issue?

What did you get your degree in?

I suspect that you're working at a grocery because you're forced to. Maybe there's few jobs in the field in which you studied.

It seems as if you're aching to get a better job--maybe that's why you're not motivated.

Sounds like you are doing quite well. Look at this change as a positive. Perhaps you were sloppy because you were bored. Or alternatively you could look for something a bit more interesting. The best time to look for a new job is when you have one already.
