I am so picky about food that if I don't favor it but attempt to eat it, I will actually retch.

It can be very stressful and annoying when dealing with food that I don't favor. I become worried about looking childish by retching; I become worried about looking childish by not eating it. The problem though is that there is something about the texture or the flavor of the food, or perhaps it mixes things together that in my mind should not be mixed, that causes such an intense reaction.

I deal with the same thing you do. Except, I learned to avoid the retching reaction all together. Now that I've learned more about asperger's. I've kind of figured out the most of my dislikes of certain foods is cause mostly by tactile issues and not so much the taste/flavor of it.

I am a VERY fussy eater and am the only such person in my extended family (my parents will literally eat almost anything). I was surprised to hear this is yet another ASD trait I share.

Ooooh yeah. I had to learn to cook because I'm too picky and felt bad rejecting pretty much everything others make for me. For the most part, if I hate something, it is a texture problem. I hate most mushy foods and squishy foods and very dry foods. I used to hate all of them, but I have managed to teach myself to tolerate certain things, like mashed potatoes, but I cannot stand fat chunks in meat, nor cartilage pieces. I definitely do retch, and I agree that it makes me feel a bit embarrassed. I also can't eat anything on the bone, and I hate seafood (except for canned tuna) and pasta (except spaghetti and Kraft Dinner), and if I eat cereal, I need to have the milk in a glass, separate from the cereal, so that the cereal doesn't get at all soggy.

There's probably more but I can't remember right now.

I'm a bit of a picky eater, not as much as I was when I was younger though. To this day I still hate mushrooms and olives, and I also don't care for eggs or unmelted cheese.
