I'm currently able to borrow a weighted shoulder pad (I know that pressure helps and wanted to see if it would be better or worse than a weighted jacket).

I really like it but I'm concerned that overuse will cause the positive effects to cease. Has anyone had this happen to them? Should I be worried about it not working anymore/needing progressively heavier weights?

I have been using a weighted blanket and lap pad daily for about three weeks and the effect hasn't worn off so far. From what I have read I don't think that it is possible to build up a tolerance to deep pressure. I just don't think it works like that.
