impromptu Boston road race to benefit AS/autism?
I know there's a walk for autism, but I figured if you have a real race you can give a portion of the entry fee as prize money to lure in more runners/money (the rest goes to the AS-related charity)
Here's what I figure. I'm from Boston and have been to the Asperger's Association of New England a couple of times. While driving around, I found that there are some rather scenic routes that go through South Brookline and places like that. I found that a particular route that started at the AANE and wound up at my apartment was exactly 15 miles.
I know, Boston already has the marathon (which, in order to win, you appear to need Kenyan citizenship). However, most people aren't exactly able to run 26 miles (well, they probably can, but in 26 hours). A 10 mile or 5 mile race would be probably pretty good -- not short but mortals can probably do it. Perhaps a half-marathon. I envision people running for about an hour.
One thing which I think would be cool is don't tell anyone the course beforehand: plop them all at the starting line and then have them follow the arrows. And don't stop traffic for the race (this would change strategy: do you really want to get a big lead only to find yourself stopped at a red light on Beacon Street and the other guy can catch up?)
Do you think something like this would work?

Something like this is a good idea. The logistics of setting this up though would be troublesome. Traffic would have to be re-routed no matter what. It would be just too dangerous to have cars and runners side-by-side.
