Being nonverbal

If you were nonverbal what would you do about it? what kind of device would you use if you became nonverbal? What apps would you use? For those of you who are born nonverbal would you rather be verbal or nonverbal?

I'm partially verbal but may have something called selected mutism I sometimes get scared and shy and I don't talk other kids also because of my autism.

There are various Augmentative and Alternative Communication Devices, some of which are very good, which nonverbal people can use.

There's also such low-tech systems as the Picture and Exchange System (PECS).

I saw a youtube video recently about a nonverbal autistic teenager who used a portable device called "dynavox t10". It was flat and about the size of a laptop screen, and hung around his neck. It had a lot of different categories and pictures he could press to say different phrases. If I were nonverbal, I think I'd like something like that. I sometimes wish I could be nonverbal, or even partially verbal; it would drastically limit peoples' expectations for conversations with me, and would allow me to be far more blunt and to the point in my communication without coming across as a careless, mean or arrogant person.

I'm usually non-verbal after a meltdown or a shutdown or mute in certain situations such as meeting a lot of new people (I'm very shy). I either use sign language (the care staff at my school can understand some sign language) or a text-to-speech app on my tablet which I always carry with me.

I used to go to school with someone who has selective mutism. She's the shyest person that I've ever met and one of the most talented too.

Most people cannot understand sign language, myself included.

If you could obtain an Augmentative Communication Device for the times when you lack speech, it would be a very useful tool, indeed.

I am Techmically verba but I am nonspeak and I use my iPad full time for communication, I also use letter boards and pecs
