I just had a disagreement with my step mother. I was clarifying a position I took on a subject she bought up yesterday in a conversation we had. She didn't take it well. In the end, she said It was the Asperger's in me doing the talking. I felt really mad and ended the conversation before it got out of control. Thinking about it now, I realize that I felt insulted to have it thrown in my face when she had nothing pertinent to say other than to say I shouldn't have said anything... Any thoughts. I'm 64 and she is 76.

She probably disagreed with you and decided to use the Asperger's card: pretty tacky, in my opinion.

Do you get along otherwise?

More or less. How do I respond? I want to call and tell her how insulting and wrong she was for playing the autism card, but I don't think she would respond well. I'm supposed to go there tomorrow to help her around the yard. I don't think I can 'pretend' this didn't happen and she will pick up on that. The ironic part of this is it was she who first realized I had Asperger's 3 years ago. On the one hand, she gave me the keys to understanding my whole life in a more useful way. On the other, it sometimes seems she doesn't cut me any slack in areas I'm unable to comprehend. I'm still figuring things out as I go so this may sound juvenile or something similar. Sorry for that...

Right now, she is likely to attribute everything you say or do as being "Because you have Asperger's", especially if you say or do something she doesn't like.
