I always thought what people meant when they said "hand flapping" was from the wrist, and loosely flapping the whole hand in a big flowing sort of motion, moving the arm with it. I don't do that so thought I don't hand flap.
But recently when stressed I noticed I do sort of open and close my hands loosely, "flapping," you might say, my fingers against my palms repetitively.
Does that count as "hand flapping"? This may end up being like the stimming thing - I always thought because I don't rock back and forth I didn't stim, but didn't realise that the constant rubbing my tongue along the backs of my teeth was a stim, just a more subtle one.
What counts as hand flapping? Are there different ways people do this?

I don't know if that counts as hand flapping, I suppose you could call it that though. I regularly do the "classic" hand flap that you don't do, but another thing I do sometimes is clench my hand into a fist repeatedly which is something I mostly just do when I'm very anxious.

My hands will shake some times and I call that stiming

Neh, but I think it's a stim.
I do the exact same thing.

Maybe not classic hand flapping, but could say type of hand flapping.

I don't think I do classic hand flapping. I hold my hands down and shake them, like if they were wet. Its either that or I hold my hands up to my chest like I am imitating a T-rex but dont really flap them in that position. And also I somtimes slap/drum my chest and thighs.

When I'm excited or happy, I still do the classic handflapping and jumping up and down a bit. Yesterday, I went into a library...so my hands and fingers were moving in various ways.

I only hand flap under extreme stress or fits. Sometimes it happens when I'm excited, but I kind of do this weird full arm jiggle above my head and bob my head back and forth like a bird. O.o I get the serious stares.

I wouldn't necessarily call what you do "classic" hand flapping, but maybe finger flapping or wiggling? o.o

I don't handflap, but depending on how stressed I am I do move my hands around a lot, flexing fingers, rotating, touching things. It's all a kind of stimming. Weirdly I don't think I've ever came across an autistic person IRL who did the classic hand-flapping. I suspect how commonplace it is is exaggerated

I actually caught myself doing this other type of hand flap 3 times today, so apparently I do actually do it.
