How do they affect autistic people? The teacher after school program told me that I have income have intellectual Discrepancies. And that I should not worry about taking the reagents as in I should not take it in a good way as in I was so worried about it because I didn't do well on my reagents and it was so hard and I walked out on the pSAT almost twice.

She said I definitely have moderate to severe autism and am not behaviorally challenged like the kids who were emotionally disturbed in that program and thought I would be made fun of she also thinks my autism is worse than my metal problems also in a good way and basically said that I have a ability in some areas and limits in others and we just have to find it's school that supports both that and my disability. Unfortunately I'm in between a rock a hard place either go to the place that is life still and vocational training but does not have high academics are going to A place that has high academics and fail like I did before. Unfortunately there is no in between at least not yet?

My grandmother my uncle and I are trying to get me back into my autism program that I was trying to get into in the first place which she said I'm too high functioning for. Will this intellectual Discrepancies thing help? I miss my old school and my old friends so much that it's making me miserable.

I would say you sort of answered your own question.

You have good ability in some things, and you're not so good in others.

There's a "discrepancy" between what you're good at, and what you're bad at. It might be somewhat more extreme in you than in most people.

This teacher you're talking about sounds like she really wants to help you. You might have finally found a good person!

They mean that a person will do really well in certain areas, but really struggle in other areas. Some autistics who manage to put their talents to good use can be really successful, Temple Grandin for example. There are ways to work around the areas you have trouble with.

I would say they affect autistic people in a similar way as they affect "normal people," except that they might be more extreme.

You might have a weakness in English, but be excellent at math. Many autistic people are excellent in math.

Then again, it might be the opposite: You might be excellent in writing stories, but terrible in math.

It really depends on the person.

I would say: A disorder in relating to people, such as autism, can cause lots of academic problems--but not necessarily.

If a kid has behavioral problems, it usually affects the kid academically--though not necessarily.

You know the old saying: When you've met one autistic person, you've met one autistic person.

There are some autistic people who are actually BRILLIANT academically.

Having autism should not stop you from going to college. One might need accommodations, though.

I have quite a noticeable discrepancy between my visual-spatial ability and verbal/numerical/other. I struggle to rotate shapes and perform other visual tasks in my mind. My short-term visual memory also seems quite bad, as I often find myself having to go back and look at something multiple times to remember what it looks like.

It used to be claimed that people with AS had a similar discrepancy to myself, and that classic autism had it reversed.

I just hope you get in a situation where you could pursue your Regent's Diploma, while having a one-on-one aide.

I also hope you find somebody who has enough confidence in you to enable to you pursue your Regent's Diploma.

Interesting article about intellectual discrepancies:
Link>New Study Finds IQ Tests Underestimate Autism Intelligence

Quote:
The conclusion reached is that pockets of abilities attributed to ASD people are actually indicators of their general intelligence, the true norm, rather than an aberration.
