I love analyzing odds of things to happen, odds of how dangerous a situation is. I look small towns and big cities around the world on the net and see how many people live there vias how many hospitals/hotels they have. if in a city of two thousands people you have five hospitals, you'd assume in a city of four thousands you should have ten hospitals, more or less.

However, I hate math and numbers. I'd rather write a blog than deal with numbers and math. I was bored to death in math classes in school. it seems a contradiction, but then many things in autism are a contradiction.

Statistics are fun. I had no problem with statistical maths when I did a subject that involved it at uni but it can be boring.

I also love stats and hate math.

For me, it's because most areas of math I was first exposed to in school, but statistics I was first exposed to by reading medical journals for fun. So I see statistics as something useful for doing an activity I find fun. Whereas most areas of math I have never found a way to apply them to something fun.

Odds don't interest me that much, though. It's more correlations, t-tests and ANOVAs that get me excited. I love seeing how different things connect together.

I don't like stats but I love math. Its not a paradox, they are different subjects. Stats just uses some math. What you are talking about requires very little math (or statistics) and is an easier (and more leisurely) hobby than say, to read complex mathematical texts.

Yes, I can't do math but statistics - any time!

I assume most people in this thread has not taken a high level stats class as you need pretty "advance" math to due even basic statistic problem, thus, you cannot divorce the two.

Hi, FAS----I've been wondering where you were!!

I can't really relate to your post; but, I'm always doing math in my head----for instance, if I know someone's age and they tell me they've been living a certain place for 15 years, I always INSTANTLY do the math; or, if I go to a restaurant and they have pies on display, I'll instantly calculate that a third of the pie, or whatever, has been eaten; or, someone says something about they did something in 1996, I'll have to calculate how many years they've been doing "whatever"----and, it just goes on and on and on----CONSTANTLY doing math----and I wouldn't even consider myself a math person (as in, good at math----except for the very basic math, I've described)! ! I'm just always calculating!! It was MURDER, when I was a cashier----because THEN everything was calculated in dollars and cents!! I would calculate a person's change, before I rang it up----but, I always had to look at the cash register, because I wasn't confident in my math skills!!

I like most applied math, including statistics.

I have taken an advanced stat course. You need to understand calculus, infinite series, fourier analysis, linear algebra and some methods in differential equations for advanced stats and stochastics. That is more similar to applied math. It uses math- but so does physics. There is a difference between pure math and applications of math. Pure math is more about proofs and foundations, and involve topics like axiomatic set theory, topology, real/complex analysis , and abstract algebra. They are similar enough that if you are bad at one you are going to be bad at the other- but they are very different subjects.

I really enjoy pure math , but I don't enjoy statistics at all- even though I did well in my stat courses.
