How do you interpret it? I'm a little confused. Does it mean that Aspies stim and Auties don't (I know it's wrong, but I want to understand the image)? Or maybe Aspies are more freaky or something?

And why is it supposed to be funny?

If there is something here that is specific to anime or Japanese culture, those of us not familiar with those may be missing too much to understand this at all. I can't even tell what the person in the high-functioning autism picture is doing...answering the phone?

Those are two particular characters from animes. It seems like the person is claiming the one character is an aspie and the other is HFA. You'd probably need to know the characters to make any sense of this poster. (Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with them.)

A random guess - maybe the AS girl is more sociable than the HFA girl?

I interpret it as being bizarre and nonsensical. It is obviously intended to be funny, but I don't "get it".

I have often found the opposite case to be true.

The 'pyon pyon' onomatopoeia on the left (aspie) is her just playing, while apparently on the right the person on the phone is saying, "Hello, this is Earth. Please respond." Apparently the autie isn't responding.

You've got to know anime.

I'll try and explain it through the anime characters I know:

EDO from Cowboy beebop. Outgoing, super intelligent, constantly talking and waving her arms. Let's say she's AS.

Then we have Rey from Evangelion or Shinji. They keep to themselves, are more serious, reserved.

That's how I interpret the picture.

Interesting stereotype, however inaccurate, yet what stereotype isn't? I can see people actually thinking this.
I'm HFA and around people I don't know I'm reserved. Although I can turn into EDO once I get to know people. I've always thought of myself as Shinji though. I think Shinji is just introverted with some emotional problems.

The anime is "The Melancholy Of Haruhi
Suzumiya." The girl on the left is Haruhi Suzumiya, and the girl on the right is Yuki Nagato. Haruhi is bored with how the real world works. She has godlike powers which allows her to pretty much recreate the world. She has an interest in anything that you wouldn't normally see in real life such as aliens, time travelers, espers, etc. She starts a school club called the SOS Brigade. Many people speculate her having AS because of her special interests, and her nonconforming behaviors. Yuki Nagato is an alien who watches over Haruhi to make sure Haruhi doesn't screw up space and time. Yuki is very introverted, while Haruhi is extroverted. Yukki's special interest is reading. I believe that the reason people see Haruhi as having AS as opposed to HFA is because she's extroverted. Maybe people with HFA are typically introverted?

Frankly, if there's a joke or something here, it's above even my head, and I'm very familiar as a rule with stuff like this, being into anime and gaming and whatnot.

I think it's just a badly thought-out attempt to be..... funny? I'm not even sure what they were intending with this one, but I AM sure that they didnt put much effort into it. NOT having the words in the pics (particularly whatever Yukki is saying on the right there) in Japanese would have been a big help, really.....

No, it looks like one of those optical computer mice with the red light underneath. It seems as if they are saying (not with words, but with the picture) that people with HFA are mentally challenged and don't know the difference between a cell-phone and a computer mouse.

I was thinking the same thing. Also, the Asperger's character seems to have more personality than the HFA one. The HFA one has a blank stare and seems like she will start drooling at any moment. It may have something to do with the underlying theme of that particular anime (and the kanji that most of us cannot read), but then again it does look somewhat prejudicial to someone who does not get the in joke.

I didn't get it either but I relate more to the picture on the right than the one on the left.

You'd definitely have to know the anime in order to understand this.

No point trying to read anything into it without knowing both about Haruhi and Yuki.

Edit: on second thought, if you don't mind spoilers, wikipedia has short summaries of their personalities:

Yuki (HFA) taken from here:

Quote:
Yuki has a very stoic and introverted personality, preferring simple body language rather than speaking. When prompted to speak, she does so in a very concise manner, always speaking in a monotone and displaying a dispassionate expression. She thinks very rationally, and finds it difficult to communicate with normal humans due to her intelligence and lack of empathy. She very rarely, if at all, talks directly to Haruhi. She enjoys reading, and is seen reading a book in the majority of her appearances, typically of the science fiction or mystery genres. As the series continues, she displays an enjoyment of computer games and develops a sense of humor, although her unchanging facial expressions make it near-impossible to discern whether she is joking or not. Despite her reserved manner, she is reliable and trustworthy, resulting in Kyon trusting her more than any other member of the SOS Brigade. Though seemingly cold and devoid of emotions at first glance, Yuki subtly shows a genuinely warm care and concern for her fellow SOS Brigade members, Kyon in particular.

Haruhi (AS) taken from here:

Quote:
Throughout the series, Haruhi's personality is shown as having many different facets, something that is often connected to her supernatural abilities and their use. She is noted as being very intelligent, athletic, and naturally talented at almost anything, leading her to join every activity club and then quit them just as quickly (despite pleas from club members). This is set against her front of coldness and indifference to anything she considers normal and uninteresting until her encounter with Kyon which causes her to become more open.

As the leader of the SOS Brigade, Haruhi shows a new side of her characteristics with what may be called selfishness, self centeredness, she is often seen bullying her members into agreeing with her many ridiculous activities especially Asahina. One example of this is her blackmailing of the Computer Club president to get a brand-new computer by setting up a photograph of supposed "sexual harassment" of the unaware Mikuru.

Haruhi also has a very competitive personality and accepts without hesitation any challenge that crosses her, regardless of difficulty or time constraint. Her constant optimism and over-confidence makes her seem arrogant. While she is competitive and apparantly smart, her character seems to be unable to make any proper tactical decisions as she often rushes into anything she considers a competition without any regards to her members. She has very high standards and won't accept anything less than perfection from herself and her Brigade. She is quite complacent and has relatively unrealistic expectations in her Brigade members, especially Kyon, to get the task done whatever it may be. This can sometimes make her seem selfish and unkind.

She is not shy and often attracts a lot of attention to the point of not minding changing clothes in front of various people, more so when her SOS Brigade is in mind. [...]

Haruhi also seems to hate showing signs of vulnerability to others. Following her concert performance at the school's culture festival when she and Yuki filled in for two members of the band ENOZ, Haruhi showed awkwardness towards the band members when they thanked her the following day. As Kyon pointed out, Haruhi was not used to receiving praise from others because of how mischievous she regularly acts towards others in pursuing her abnormal interests.

[...]

The SOS Brigade is very precious to her and has stated to Kyon that she has no intention of yielding her position as Chief to anyone else. She will go to any lengths, even by exploiting the members, to bring attention and support for her Brigade such as procuring room and materials, maintaining their website, participating in sports tournaments, organizing activities such as city-wide searches for strange phenomenon among other things.

It's onomatopoeia for jumping. Onomatopoeia is basically words that represent a sound in language, like BANG or BOING in English. In Japanese, the concept, however, is expand to include words that represent something else, like jiro jiro for staring.

OMG! I was wondering if I had heard of or seen this series before I got into it a couple months ago. Basically, the character on the left is Haruhi Suzumiya and the character on the right is Yuki Nagato in chibified form. Here is Yuki Nagato in non-chibified form, though wearing glasses which she ditches early in the series:

Image

I don't know about Haruhi, but Yuki has been said by both Western and Japanese fans to be autistic-like (in Japanese, I have seen her described as jiheishou-gimi, "having a touch of autism").

She does seem to touch on the points well: She has little emotional expression, she has a tendency to either make sentences too simple or too complicated (making it difficult for the protagonist to understand her), and she tends to have a few narrow things she likes to do, like to read even when others are interacting or as depicted later in the series apparently eating curried rice every night. There's also the fact that she's a humanoid interface created by this weird God-like alien thing for the purpose of monitoring and interacting with humans. One major point of her character development, which I think many people on the sprectrum should be able to identify with (and at least one other poster here agrees), is the contrast of her lack of emotional expression to her actual emotional experience, which is significant and causes a big blow up at one point as she bottles all that stuff up inside herself.
