Your Service Dog Experiences

I've recently latched onto autism service dogs as a minor new obsession, and am considering planning to start saving for one to help me with basic navigation (from public spaces to my car for example), interruption of self-injurious behaviours, proprioceptive input, and possibly, reminding me to take my meds, as I forget on a semi-regular basis. Is this an absurd idea? Is it totally overkill? Dogs are extremely expensive and high maintenance, and they make public access difficult, because certain places still refuse them, despite their admittance being required by law. I'm interested in hearing about your experiences with autism service dogs; feel free to go into as much detail as you like. I'd like to learn as much as possible, both from a functional information, and a special interest standpoint.

And while I'm at it, I might as well ask if any of you have advice on where to go to find people who sell service dogs to adults: frustratingly, the only sites I've found only cater to children, as usual.
