I have recently known a few weeks ago on my Monday Club for Asperger syndrome adults at the discontent about supporting Asperger syndrome adults in learning how to use their Asperger syndrome in thought processing to teach people how to develop a thought processing system in which a person can motivate him or herself to improve personal hygiene et.c and encourage a person to develop a thinking style and a specialist interest which may lead to their employment because most autistic people that are in employment can learn an interest in either because of repetition associated with anxiety and or routines which are a help with anxiety and or sensory regulation. I have an idea of an organisation called Supporting Hands which is a self support service for Asperger syndrome people to provide mutual support and friendship in times of crisis or in need when something goes wrong in their lives because the support workers, staff will be Asperger syndrome people using their Asperger syndrome for the good of people on the autistic spectrum. It is an idea that the more able autistic is only that way because he or she has developed a thinking style to cope and fake allism to gain a foothold in society. It can be like a drop in centre similar to some mental health organisations run by allistic people recovering from a mental health condition. A goal is to allow a person to be him or herself and to enjoy having Asperger syndrome and not to feel ashamed of it because of society's and the media's deliberate misconceptions about Asperger syndrome and other kinds of high functioning autistic people. Also picture thinking and almost synaesthesia can allow an autistic person to basically approximate the social skills to cope in society and not be excluded. I always practised a sort of If you scratch your back Ill scratch my back. A sort of care support by disabled people using their disabilities for the support of others which is a good idea but I don't know where to look for a funding opportunities for this work to commence and a place for us to be a voice for autistic people other than allistic people who do not really understand autism/Asperger syndrome instinctly and the only people who really understand who know what it is like to be an autistic child. I don't know of agencies which can get such funding for such an operation. I wouldn't mind a bit of feedback
Hi aspiewordsmith,
I've also had thoughts of starting a similar organization. While the organization in my mind would run a bit differently to what you have mentioned - it would teach actionable job skills rather than act as a drop in centre - I think our vision is similar: to provide a safe and supportive environment to develop personally, outside of and supplementary to existing support systems.
My very high-level and initial thoughts were to not get "funding" (in terms of money) but to see if I could partner with an existing Autism organization and school and use their facilities. There are a number of benefits to this: (1) it is unlikely that local autism organizations and schools use their facilities 100%; (2) it may not make sense from a financial perspective for my operations to start entirely with new facilities as this is expensive and I'm unlikely to have many users at the start; (3) existing organizations/schools already have a customer base.
Anyhow, I haven't actually go through and implemented this at all - these are really only thoughts. In addition, the nature of the local organizations may vary significantly from one region to another (in terms of whether they have facilities and how willing they are to partner with someone else).
Nevertheless, I wish you the best of luck. And if you do get funding or a partnership, please share your story!
