Had a lovely experience today at work I thought I would share, since its nice to be reminded of the positive sides of being an Aspie!

So, its lunchtime and I'm outside on the field with my class of 7-8 year olds... When one of my girls chirps up and says "I'm getting new vans tonight"

Me, taking everything literally, blurts out "don't think they will fit will they?"

My class is used to my wonky humour, but they stare at me absolutely stunned as if I've actually lost the plot this time...

"should look into getting some cars instead, much smaller" >>>> My class absolutely cracks up realising I was making a joke about her "vans" not being a brand of shoe but actual vehicles.

So yeah, it probably sucks coming across in written form, but I thought I would share it!

It would be a generational moment not an autistic one for me because I had no idea vans are a brand of shoes.

Me too. I had a vague inkling that it was some new-fangled use of the word, and a grumpy feeling of "I bet they've hijacked another of our words."

I've noticed how autistic misunderstandings can often come over as good jokes though. I quite enjoy reading slogans etc. and interpreting them literally, which is what my brain always does as a first resort. Some of them raise a laugh. I wish I could remember a good example.

I have a new saying

It's not just Autism
It's material.

I work with teens and thought the interchange was funny

Kid and teen speak changes frequently.
So does their tech.
Students have toldme-You don't have to worry about someone stealing your phone Dr laugh.
(Yes I still have a flip)

I have made a few autism related jokes myself.

There is a game called Unturned, which is a zombie survival game with a simplistic art style. There is a vaccine item in the game which helps with disease, and once when I used one in game I said "Oh no, I have autism now!". XD

Now I'm just waiting for someone to jokingly call me autistic so I can say yes and see their reaction. I hear that it can be quite funny.

So, I show up to my Dad's office in the RAV4. He comes outside, he works at a University as a supervisor in the parking department. He says to me "So, how did you get here?" Unblinkingly, unsmiling, I say...

"I took the RAV4," while gesturing to the vehicle. He bursts out laughing. Too late did I realize he meant what route did I take to get there.
