How to keep self-respect?

When you keep having epic social fails (incl. work) and most everyone looks down on you?

I also have a problem with this. Every time i do something stupid i beat myself up afterwards and get really depressed for days. When I'm in public, I tell myself that I can handle myself...and then I get in a store and bring on the sensory overload.
