I asked a question for how long it takes to be diagnosed and nobody answered. I would think some people knew here.

Aspergers is not a recognised diagnosis in the latest revision of DSM, DSM-V. It is now part of the "umbrella" of ASD - Autism Spectrum Disorder.

I was diagnosed with high functioning autism about two months ago by a psychiatrist, but my GP and psychologist just say that I have Aspergers Syndrome.

The diagnosis was complete for me within two weeks. I didn't even really know anything about Aspergers. I was admitted to a mental health unit for self harm and planning suicide. This meant I was under observation 24/7 for a couple of weeks and had regular meetings with a psychiatrist and other mental health practitioners. By the end of the two weeks I was told I had Bipolar type II and "High Functioning Autism".

I live in Australia. The process might be more strung out in other countries. My experience of intensive observation probably isn't very common in this community.

It depends. From starting my assessment until the end I had someone someone come to my house once a week for roughly 3 months. Then it was another 4 months till I got my final report with my diagnosis on it. I wasn't diagnosed with aspergers though but autism spectrum disorder.

The length of time and difficulty involved with diagnosis are different for everyone. I'm in the US, it took me two 2-hour visits to a psychologist and a few supplementary visits before I got my diagnosis, but others in the US had more or fewer visits. There is no good way to accurately estimate the amount of time it would take to get a diagnosis.

am getting tested now for "autism" dont know the outcome .
been twice talking to a psych asking me different questions still got a few appointments to go , and still have to do some visual exame .
after they will say what it is.

My assessment (ADOS) took about 3.5 hours. They said that there were other tests that could have been administered that would take the rest of the day if the first half was inconclusive. I would recommend seeing someone who breaks it up over multiple sessions though. Cramming it all into one day made everything feel kind of rushed, like the goal was just to get through the testing rather than for them to understand and evaluate me properly.

I was diagnosed with Asperger’s in 2013 at the age of 50. It took about 7 weeks to schedule the first of 3 appointments (each appointment was 2 hours). I received the diagnosis 3 weeks after my first appointment.

i was diagnosed with Aspergers in 2011 and it was never professionally changed to ASD but my Psychologist and i both agree its somewhere in level 3.

The process was long enough, about half a year or so. the process started in August of 2011 and ended in january of 2012. i only found out by march of 2012

I have been diagnosed by 10 doctors approximately.

If you speech/functioning problems, then they may diagnose you on the first visit. I had severe speech difficulties of forming strings of words.

For me, it took 1 hour; 40 mins with the junior doctor going through paperwork, and 20 mins with the senior doctor who asked questions to see whether I had schizophrenia or autism.

Later on, when I saw an autism specialist, I took like an 8 hour test (forgot the name of it) where they test your visual, auditory, memorization, drawing capabilities and IQ I think. It was useless.

I was sectioned in the 70s for 6months. I met some really weird people in the NPC. They all got labels. They didn't know what was wrong with me. They thought that I was odd. I got diagnosed in Miami as asperger in 2002.

I was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome in late 1997, at age 13, after having been diagnosed with PDD-NOS by the end of 1990. The session, as I understood it, didn't take that long, but the doctor utilized multiple sources of information. My current diagnosis is autism spectrum disorder.

Starting in 1993, I received autism resource services at school.

Well, for me, I had to meet with a mental health worker, who then sent me to a therapist, who then sent me to the psychiatrist and talking/testing with the therapist took two 2 hour visits. I think everything took maybe 2-3 months, and after telling me I'm autistic, the psychiatrist said she didn't want to label me. So I technically don't have a diagnosis... even though she described me perfectly fitting the DSM5...

Hello. I was diagnosed with Aspergers a few weeks ago. I'm in the UK and in the north of Scotland (Scotland has a different health service to the rest of the UK ).

It took about 4 months from first getting referred by GP. I had 2 meetings with psychologist - about 4 hours all together. I felt it could have been more thorough. I had to pay for it as there is no adult diagnosis service up here.

I was diagnosed with "regular" Autism when I was 4, but re-diagnosed with AS when I was 13.

I was diagnosed with Aspergers in Sep 2013. Age, 60.
