http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0383lf2 - it's so interesting, the way it's presented. Are those on the spectrum supposed to have, at the very least, different kind of mirror neurons? I know I could always empathize mostly with other animals...

Well no! It's not so and logically its not so either.
The hive doesn't mean 100% in a bunch, but most possibilities or individuals are in a cluster-center. Evolution and probability need variance, most is lumped in and around the hive, but indefinite small numbers of individuals will expand to indefinite possibilities, even the unviable, for survival.
