Disney World trip IMO you have to plan it. Rides where everything is as you walk in (doable in this day and age with apps and the internet). Universal (same thing) etc. etc. I live in Florida so can go practically any time I want but still!! ! IMO what if you forgot to get a shirt or you meant to ride the new OMG! coaster? That trip is ruined and while yes "live in FL" might still be a few years before I go back.

We are planning a cruise a small 2 days across the water to the Bahamas and back but you still need to plan stuff you'd need "need" AKA to pack to have when going away for any length of time away from home. This doubly so than a Disney or Tennessee trip since it's out on the ocean some huge ship you don't know what you'd be missing and think OMG! should have packed X. At least Tennessee, NYC and Disney you are in the USA and you can pretty much walk into any store fine but this is different.

Cruise ship a new environment of sorts (went on one but way back when I was 11 now 29).

Also there are dinners where you sit around with other people UGH! Hate small talk having to socialize UGH!

My family hates the planning idea and just "wings it" "what happens happens" UH! NO! Again miss getting a t-shirt or OMG! NEW Coaster etc. BUT Hey you sure do like planning when it comes to the road and following my iPhone GPS! OR knowing from a map where the restrooms are considering the area of the theme park we are currently in for examples SHEESH!

Anyone relate? More so the planning for "packing" context off shore etc. vs. the "do stuff" context angle. Forget to pack something then what????

They do plan, just not as thoroughly as you do.
If they didn't plan they'd just start walking in some random direction without even getting into their car

Yeah, I'm being a smartass, sorry. But the only real answer is that they're dumb. What else is there?

The truth is NTs are NOT dumb, they're incredibly smart and genius. Compared to everything else known.
It's just that you're smarter.

Sorry, you're fu*ked. Because smart people try to learn from other people's successes and failures, you will be constantly evaluating other people's behaviors. Because you are smarter than most people you will each time be plagued with how mind crushingly stupid people almost always are.
You're fu*ked because it's your mind that's being crushinglyed.

Either that or they just don't wanna micromanage all that stuff and figure that (in this day and age) everything will work out okay.
And they're probably almost always right.

NTs don't plan not because they're 'dumb', because they simply feel like it.

As far as I know, unplanned or coincidental moments for them is 'sweeter', even more memorable than planned ones. Things that are predictable has a lesser 'impact' in general.

I can relate since my best friend (who is NT) never plans almost anything. It drives me insane. Maybe you can try telling them that it makes you nervous and that you would need things to be a bit more planned?

They like to be spontaneous, whatever that means. I also like to have things planned out.

If you are 29 why are you even going on this trip if you don't want to? I mean it sounds like you don't see the appeal and its just more stress than its worth. And last time I was at an amusement park nothing as large as Disney World just Lakeside Amusement park in Colorado close enough to take the bus from where I live...I didn't get to ride the roller coaster I wanted and planned to because of the long line and wanting to go on other rides to, of course it is a very old roller coaster but still just made the best of the evening, there where plenty of other things to ride.

I feel a cruise could be cool, but IDK...never really had a chance to think about going on one or not. I suppose I don't have any very good advice but perhaps finding ways to cope with problems you run into like forgetting clothing items or other things. Maybe think of solutions for what you can do beforehand so instead of getting all stressed when that does happen you can be more prepared....like even on the cruise I imagine there are going gift shops or something that would likely have shirts, other clothes or other stuff you might forget if you run into such a situation. Never been on a cruise but they might even have complimentary toiletries like in the rooms sort of like a hotel not sure though...if you forget some of your own.

Eh, not all autistics are good at planning. Or plan at all.

I dont really do it at all. I tend to just do things whenever I happen to feel like it. And I usually make a point of telling people that I dont do well with planned out things, as I may change my mind on stuff entirely at random. I prefer not to say something like "sure, I'll definitely be at this event" as I may choose at the last minute to do something else instead.

Sure didnt help back when I used to work, I tell ya that much. Nowadays though, it doesnt really matter.

Most people would not consider the trip ruined just because they forgot one ride or to get a shirt. That's why they don't want to plan everything out - because having it 100% perfect isn't a big priority, and acting on a whim can be fun.

If you don't plan all the details you won't get disappointed if what you planned doesn't work out. NTs know it from the start but I had to learn it the hard way. And since then I try my best to make general plans with a lot of "we will decide what to do when we get there" free time. When I expect that something unpredictable will happen I am not surprised when it happens, whatever it is.

However it still messes me up when there is no general plan or when my general plan gets changed. For example last time I had a meltdown because I made a general plan starting with "We leave between 9AM and 12AM." and my friend told me suddenly that she wants to start the trip at 7:30AM so I have to wake up early next morning.

NTs actually do plan stuff. My parents carefully plan every trip that we go on.

A motorcycle trip that will consist of one evening, a full day, then home requires I plan and pack a weekend in advance.

I don't always pack a lot, but I use the weekend before to think about what I need, don't need, and plan on how I'm loading the bike so cases are somewhat evenly loaded. Nothing can really be packed until the night before, but I set up a sort of "staging area" where what is going to go is set aside and ready to be packed.

People say I could do that all the night before.

Yes. I could...and be a nervous wreck thinking that I'm forgetting something important.

My way, I don't really have to rethink anything because I already did all of that.

I think a lot of them do plan, but they don't monologue about every little detail of it to the people around them.

It depends on the person. I overplan (sometimes for 10 yrs down the road). I took a cruise once and I was planning what to bring at least 6 months in advance. What I have found out is that the most planned excursions aren't as fun as the times where I just "winged it". And the times where I just "winged it" I remember the most as being not just good times, but great times. Overdoing anything can take the fun out of it. I still overplan (it's a hard habit to break).

NT's do plan, some as well as you, and others not so much. I usually have a set out plan for everything I do.
