On the members only forum there is a sticky thread called 'for those who are not mild by any means' I think some of those users are non verbal and partially verbal.

This. My verbal IQ is 134, and I'm usually very good with words, however, there are times when I'll become nonverbal, or at least unintelligible, where I try to speak but I can't form a complete word or sentence, and I sound like I have a severe stutter. When this happens, I'm under a lot of stress, and it's a sign to me that a meltdown is approaching. There are a few around here like SteelMaiden and ASDogGeek who are verbal, but who find speech very difficult, and subsequently prefer nonverbal communication such as writing. If you're looking for something specific regarding the topic, they might be good people to talk to.

What do you remember about it? Were you happy? Are you happier now? How did you communicate before you were verbal? How did other people treat you? When/how did you start talking? Feel free to tell me anything else you think is relevant.

I'm selectively mute, and I really struggle with others being indirect, and body-language, but I don't recall ever being non-verbal. My son is totally non-verbal at 7 1/2.

I starting speaking at the age of about 2.

I don't and didn't talk often, I'm too busy thinking.

Why are you mute? Have you always been? When/how did you learn to read? Are you happy? How do others treat you?

I was completely nonverbal until about 8 years old and am still mainly nonverbal.
I am unable to talk in full sentences.
Have had a lot of speech therapy.
I mainly communicate by making gestures and using text.
I am okay with it and everyone in my family is used to it.
I go to a school for special needs, so my teachers know how to work with me.
For me in addition to autism I have aparxia of speech and selective mustism.

Here is me reading from a list of words. It's the best I have done so far.

What helped you to start talking? How old were you when you learned to read?

Sounds familiar, but I heard in my case it was somewhere between three and four but by the time I turned five everyone was telling me to stop interupting their conversations. Later on in my school years I had a few "quiet" periods, retreating to near total introversion to where even family members had trouble pumping information out of me, and I ended up getting sent to psychologists, pathologists, and so forth. In high school I learned to speak up again when I built a sound system and started DJ'ing the weekend dances during the dicso days of the late 1970's.
Nowdays my NT spouse will tell you I still have times when I totally "clam up" after saying something that got someone upset, but usually by the next day I'm back to myself.
We have an autistic boy who is mostly nonverbal, often only saying "yeah" or "nah" when asked yes/no type questions. Otherwise he prefers typing out what he wants to communicate on a tablet device for us to read. AFAICT, he has no hearing problems like I do, at least not yet, so I've not considered offering to teach him signing.

I never had any difficulty talking and everything happened at normal time, but my language was often oldfashioned, stilted and proffessor´ish. I´ve sometimes trouble pronouncing, getting words right or constructing a sentence, when stressed or insecure, -and I sometimes have a slight stutter/blocking of words.
