Right now, they can't shut me up!

Sounds familiar, but I heard in my case it was somewhere between three and four but by the time I turned five everyone was telling me to stop interupting their conversations. Later on in my school years I had a few "quiet" periods, retreating to near total introversion to where even family members had trouble pumping information out of me, and I ended up getting sent to psychologists, pathologists, and so forth. In high school I learned to speak up again when I built a sound system and started DJ'ing the weekend dances during the dicso days of the late 1970's.
Nowdays my NT spouse will tell you I still have times when I totally "clam up" after saying something that got someone upset, but usually by the next day I'm back to myself.
We have an autistic boy who is mostly nonverbal, often only saying "yeah" or "nah" when asked yes/no type questions. Otherwise he prefers typing out what he wants to communicate on a tablet device for us to read. AFAICT, he has no hearing problems like I do, at least not yet, so I've not considered offering to teach him signing.
