I always knew there was something wrong with me as a little kid but I never knew what it was and because of that I have struggle through my young life and during that time. My life was filled with regret, bullying and haunting memories so when I discovered I have autism at 16. I thought my life was saved and I would finally get the help that I deserve in school with academically and socially along with my family treating me better and helping me but that wasn't the case in reality my life gotten worse. The school hasn't done nothing and my family refuses 2 believe it and insulted me when my autism comes up in topic by saying I am only lazy and I believe what I believe because of my ego. I am struggling everyday and each school year its gets worse and worse in school and at home. I am reaching my breaking point (not suicide btw but hope for the future). Like my records doesn't even say I have autism so I haven't gotten disability benefits and I don't know if I ever will. What do I do? I am 17 but I am turning 18 in 2 weeks idk if that helps. I want 2 know what should I do?

Were you ever officially diagnosed with autism?

Why isn't it in your records then?

I'm thinking maybe the school thinks you'll do better in regular classes.

I think it's better if you get a high school diploma rather than a GED. Are you in New York State? Then it's definitely better to get the Regent's Diploma.

I know a year feels like a long time. In most cases, I would continue to go to school and graduate.

Is there a possibility you might NOT graduate next June? If so, then maybe I'd go for the GED.

My school ignored my previous Asperger's diagnosis and no one understood what autism does. All of it I couldn't understand.

Were you diagnosed by a doctor? If so, contact that doctor and get a hard copy of your diagnosis. Take that to the school and tell them you want an IEP. They have to do it. That will get you the help you need in school.

As for disability benefits, you have to apply for them and you have to be disabled by whatever it is and unable to work because of it to get them. You don't just automatically get them because you have autism. I'm not at all disabled by mine and plenty of people here aren't either. I wasn't diagnosed until middle age and it wasn't really a big deal when I was. It just explained some things about myself to me and helped me handle myself better. I didn't expect anyone to bend over backwards for me because of it, and there was no need to anyway. I had learned to deal with the world and take care of myself, my husband and my kids. Back when I was a kid nobody knew about AS, so I was just weird, not special.

I'd suggest you take matters into your own hands and get the help you need. The first step is calling the dr who diagnosed you.

Autism diagnosis doesn't guarantee anything to you, like disability benefits or school accommodations.
You have to ask for these, and probably try hard to get them if you want them.
For school, I suggest asking for very few accommodations that you really need, perhaps just one or two to start with.
Then, see if you make better progress academically with these.
For disability, it is very hard to get benefits, and benefits are not much to live on, so it is better to think about what you can do to support yourself in future, better than poverty trap of disability benefits.
For severe anxiety, you should get professional therapy if possible, as that is going to screw with your life in many areas if you don't reduce it to a manageable level.
