OMG! SOme of those theories are really out there! I myself can debunk a few of them w/ anecdotal evidence. My oldest son was born in rainy central PA. My youngest son was born here in IN where they have had a terrible drought for the last several years. Both my oldest and youngest have AS (well, youngest is WAY too young to diagnose, but we know.
) I don't, and NEVER in my entire life have, watch much tv. Maybe 2-4 hours PER WEEK total on average. I don't smoke, never have. I don't play video games. At least not often. Maybe for 2 hours a month. I had a stressful pregnancy w/ my oldest and second sons. My 2nd son is NT. I didn't work while pregnant w/ my third and I had a homebirth w/ a lovely midwife, so his pregnancy wasn't stressfull. I wouldn't say I eat a really high fat diet, but my diet is definitely not low fat. And I eat meat, so there's some cholesterol in it (and I have high cholesterol whether I eat meat or not, so low cholesterol wouldn't be a problem for my babies anyway. Cholesterol is very important for brain development, btw, which is why infants should nurse or get whole cow's milk for 2 years. Formula milk has no cholesterol in it, which I can't understand.)
Let's see... what else was there. Oh, my youngest hasn't been vaccinated yet, so that's not the issue... Any other theories?
I personally think it is a combination of genetics and environment. You have to have the genes for it, but those genes have to be "turned" on by something in the environment. Maybe pollution (air, water, and don't forget food!)
But whatever, there have always been people w/ AS. It's just in teh past we were the eccentric old guy painting pictures or doing mysterious science experiments in his lonely house up on the hill whereas now, we're that weirdo who lives in teh apartment next door.
