DH and I are watching Switched At Birth, which is a show that illustrates Deaf culture. DH thinks that Deaf people are missing out by not being able to hear or not being able to hear well. I think that his sense of smell, his ability to differentiate sounds, his sense of touch and texture is blunted. He has special interests, so that's not blunted in him, but I think most NT people are seriously underdeveloped in their ability to focus, think, and learn.

As an Autistic adult with strong sensory perception, I could say that he is missing out on his sensory perception because he is not Autistic, just as he as a hearing person thinks that Deaf people are missing out because they cannot hear. However, I can understand why he wouldn't want to give up NT culture and the way he communicates with the world to be Autistic (and have greater sensory perception) in the same way I can understand why Deaf people wouldn't want to give up Deaf culture and the way they communicate with the world to be hearing (and have greater sensory perception).

Do you ever wonder if NT people are missing out on how they sense, learn, and think about the world? What do you think about that?

I don't wonder, I know that they're missing out.

But everybody misses out on something. I feel positively cheated that I can't see infrared and ultraviolet.

I think that autistic people are missing out a lot more than vice versa.

But it's very hard to say what they are missing. I can't really say because I have absolutely no idea how they see the world and how much it differs from my own perception.

Of course they miss-out since they're "preoccupied" with being phony a lot of the time.

I guess that I do have a decent idea of how NTs perceive because I'm around my DH so much and know how he perceives, and I have Autistic and NT children.

What is DH?

It's a common internet abbreviation for husband and stands for "dear husband".
DD= dear daughter
DS= dear son
