Do you believe, trying to impress others is just an NT thing or do you try to impress people? If you DO care what others think, why?

I voted yes. But only because of the wording of the question. Aspies are on the lower end of the autistic spectrum and therefore are much like "normal" people in many ways.

I do try to impress people and care. One reason is that it gives me power.
People who are impressed by me are more likely to comply with my will.
People who have a bad impression of me will disregard me and I'm unlikely to get what I want from them.
I also like to have this power just for the sake of having it.

I like to impress people with what I am impressed with and share the experience.

However what I think is impressive and what I try to impress with is mostly different from what I've heard NTs think is impressive.

At work, I used to like impressing people with my computer 'fixing' skills but then I realised, they didn't really give a damn about me or my abilities and were only interested in using me to fix their computers. Since then, whenever they ask me to fix their computer, I now act dumb because I realised they weren't impressed with my abilities. They were just using me so they could get back to work faster than if they had to ring the IT 'professionals' (who'd take more than 2 days to get back to them) who are employed by our Department to fix the things I can fix in 30 seconds.
Since then, I don't care for them or how impressed they are with me.

I've returned to how I was as a child/teenager. All I care about is if I impress myself - and I do.
I've stopped caring, worrying or placing so much importance on what others think about me.

I've always danced to the beat of my own drum and I shall continue to do so.

^ When I feel that people are just using me I will not help them either. Screw 'em!
I know it sucks when people can't/don't want to see what one thinks is very impressive.
But oh well, can't please everyone. Like you said impressing oneself still works.

But you can also impress by just making an impression, not actually doing something for somebody that benefits them.

Think of it this way:

They are impressed with your ability to fix the computers so they can get back to work quicker.

It's better than them thinking you're a total idiot--don't you think?

Thank you. It's the truth! Even in High School, I never cared enough about what people thought about me to change my behavior. I always LOVED spending my time in the Library!

If ever I chose to play handball with them, they would taunt me over not playing with them for the months I spent in the Library. I never cared!

I care what people think. It just subconsciously matters to me. I definitely know how NTs feel because I feel the exact same way. I don't want to be ridiculed. I'm too self-aware to be thought of as weird. I like to feel accepted.

Fair enough if you don't care what others think and it doesn't affect your thoughts or feelings. Like I always say, things only matter if you care. So I'm not against Aspies who don't care what people think or aren't self-aware. But I do hate it when Aspies say to me to stop caring what others think. Some Aspies have the ''if you want to do it, do it'' attitude, but I haven't got the guts to do something out of the norm in public or in front of friends. Even something like putting my fingers in my ears at a loud sudden noise. Something in my brain just doesn't let me. The thoughts and feelings of other people are just too important to me. Sorry.

Good morning Kraftie. I was hoping you'd pipe in sooner or later. Yes, that would be cool but alas, I've not been able to teach them that yet BUT... I did bring my bird cage from my Mum's place at Bass Hill to my home here at Padstow hoping to catch and look after a nestling/fledgling Myna. I'm in the process of building a breeding box for them.

It's easy! Most people HATE them with a vengeance and tell you what not to leave out (food wise) for them, so I take that advice in and turn it around to know what I should be feeding them.

I've seen it spelled "mynah" as well; which is correct?

I can't help it Joe. If I'm on the station and the station master blows their whistle, I don't put my fingers in my ears by choice. I find the noise crippling. If I see them put the whistle to their lips, I preempt what's going to happen and block my ears. Whistles to the ears are like vinegar to my nose, like scratchy woolen clothing to my skin, like old fluros to my ears. Even when I started going to infants school, my Mum made me a woolen jumper and despite she'd spent ages making it for me (which I never acknowledged at the time), I put it on for 3 seconds and had to get it off. Even when I wasn't much more than a toddler.

I've gotten used to the noise of the NYC subway. When I was a kid, though, it was difficult to deal with.

I still can't handle showers or hair cuts Kraftie! When I was a kid, hair cuts were UNBEARABLE!

I hated them. Showers too - still! the water hitting my skin feels like needles sticking into me.
As in the case of hair cuts. I ALWAYS end up with a rash around my neck and back but the sensation of the electric hair clippers sens chills down my spine - when he does my neck -

I didn't do too well with showers, either. Fortunately, until I was double-digits in age, I used to take baths.

I used to run away from the barber sometimes.

If it's not too rude a question, how often do you shower, or, I guess the correct question should be, how often do you go without showering? Or bathing. Washing?

I shower every day, sometimes twice a day.

If I went without a shower for two straight days, I wouldn't smell too good. I have oily skin.
