I tend to torture my dog by hugging him too tightly. Sometimes when we're out walking, I get so mad about some social rejection that I've experienced and I start swinging my fist at him, punching him very softly. Thank God I don't punch him hard enough to break his poor fragile skin. :( What do I do to stop myself?

I love my dog!

I just wished I realized it!

'Torture' might be too strong a word for that- some people actually TORTURE animals.

Just remind yourself frequently that your dog has a mind and a perspective behind his eyes.

Here's what you should do : STOP HITTING YOUR DOG IMMEDIATELY!!

If you have to let off steam get a punching bag or hit a pillow.

Peace bro

When I was a kid, I tortured animals. I destroyed ant hills, then ants got pissed off, and I threw them some green worms. Ants got pissed off and bit worms. Worms were intoxicaded with the poison and they had a slow death .

Now I have changed, and I try to protect animals.

So you get frustrated with your dog and you hit him, and the you feel guilty about it? Yeah, that's not torturing animals. It isn't right, though; your dog doesn't deserve it.

I used to do things like hold my cat when she didn't want to be held, or grab her tail and hold on while she tried to get away, or pinch my little sister's ear, or any number of small cruelties... Most of those things I did when I was in my very early teens--11 to 13 or so. I don't know why I did them--"experimenting" with negative emotion might be an explanation, though it's not a very good one--but I eventually stopped (because I knew it was wrong), and haven't done anything near that cruel since. So I don't think it is some horrible problem; it is probably something you can stop on your own.

Try this:
Whenever you feel like you are about to do something like that, get away from your dog. Go across the room, to a different room, back inside... Whenever you think about hurting an animal, consciously stop yourself from thinking it.

What you are doing seems relatively mild... your dog seems pretty tolerant. But you don't want to hurt him, so don't. If you have to hit something, pick a non-living target.

I did as a child, I'm ashamed to admit. Not exactly "torture" but I wasn't nice.

I started being nice to animals around age 12. Cats now like me, but dogs usually don't.

8O Apatura!
I thought it was just boys that did that and that it was normal. I wanted to do experiments on them but never really did cuz I didn't want to hurt them. Even just rolly-pollies: I felt bad if I took one apart.

Think about it this way. Dogs, on average, have the intellectual capacity of a six-year-old child, which means they're capable of remembering the hitting. You probably remember how kids punched you or kicked you in the schoolyard, for reasons you didn't even know. I'm sure it doesn't feel good, and maybe even painful to think about. Your dog feels the same way about being hit. It will remember you hitting it, and it won't even know why. And are you really OK with your dog feeling like that?

This is a bit non sequitur, but have you ever brought a person into your house only to have your (normally friendly) dog go freaking CRAZY and act like they were about to maul him? That's happened to me about three times, and all three times they all turned out to be ****s.

When I was 6-9 years old I was pretty rough with my brother's cat
I'm glad I'm not like that anymore.
