A friend of mine has criticised me for my lack of ambition and says its gutless and lazy. I just can't help it the drive to work up the ladder/social mobility ain't there.

I get called lazy because of that as well, but it's with my school work. So you are not alone. :|

The whole idea of “drive” and “ambition” makes me so angry. It’s all just part of the social game. If you are perfectly happy where you are, then that’s all that matters, even if you are scrubbing toilets.

To me, drive and ambition is the sentiment of actively choosing what you want to do in life and trying your best to do it rather than just being passive and accepting a situation you don't like where you are able to change it.

If you are completely happy with your situation or are just in a position where you are unable to improve it then wanting to maintain status quo counts as all the ambition you need in my book.

So if the drive for you to move up the social ladder isn't there because it is just something you don't want to do or just are not that fussed about then I don't think it reflects badly on you at all.

Pfffft Ambition does not necessarily mean that you aspire to becoming the next CEO of Enron.

-Maybe you want to take part in breakthrough research in finding the cure for cancer.
-Maybe you want to become a great musician.
-Maybe you want to invent the first magic carpet.

I think some of you need to revisit the definition of ambition.

I associate ambition with career/work. If there is an association of career and socializing, you are in wrong career.

Fresco, I would guess your friend would say the very same thing about me.

Does your friend know about AS?

I have received these comments about my apparently laziness and lack of drive as well. I'm not quite sure how they've originated.

I DO have goals in life, it doesn't necessarily mean I have to share it with everyone.

My psychiatrist had an interesting observation that bears on this discussion. He encouraged me to do something that I love, rather than trying to find work (I'm on disability) and putting up with all of the "teamwork", aka "office politics" and plain old-fashioned BS. I'm getting in touch with my state's Rehab Dept. about getting set up to do computer-based artwork and graphic design. Software engineering was once a lot of fun, but it's not been the same since the suits (all NT, natch) took over.

Markaudette, I told her I had developmental delay, she said don't invent things and excuses, just get on with life. She just DON'T UNDERSTAND, completely ignorant actually, I think I'm going to have to avoid her cos it does not do me any good. I know she means well and does care but she just comes out with the worst things.

And they say we don't have tact!

This ambition stuff makes me so angry!
All the NT population cares about is advancing yourselves. What if you are perfectly happy where you are? NTs play this stupid social game, I'm positive I don't want to be apart of it! At my job at a large university in Canada, You would not believe the political bulsh*t that goes on their. It makes me want to scream!!
I better stop now because I feel a rant coming on!!

ambition means you aren't content with staying in the same mediocre position for eternity and you are working to do great things. Obviously, people have different ideas of where they want to go in life. You can be happy with where you currently are but still tell yourself you won't be happy if you stay there too long.

Sorry to break it to you but ambition has nothing to do with NTs or the "social ladder" except that very successful people are naturally given more social leeway which is why aspies at the top don't have as much trouble making friends (like dan aykroyd ).

i would have thought that due to our obsessions, there would be more ambitious aspies, because we have focus.

Ambition can be misunderstood though; I am very ambitious in terms of I want to be the best I can be and become as good mathematician as my potential allows although people think that I am not ambitious because I don't have any great ambitions in terms of career/jobs except that I would like to eventually earn enough to live pretty comfortably with some luxuries (say, £18,000-20,000) and have any job that I don't hate. Idon't have the ambition to do much more than that because there are no jobs that particularly appeal to me and if I earnt much more money than that; I wouldn't have much to spend it on.
