Why getting rid of Aspergers was a stupid ass decision

In case you've been living under a rock, the DSM decided to nuke the aspergers diagnosis back in 2012. Now, everyone is diagnosed with autism instead of aspergers. In my opinion, this is a stupid ass decision and here's why.


1. [b]They are grouping the high functioning and the low functionings together under one diagnosis.

Why is this a bad thing? Because I don't know about you but I don't want to be in the same classification with a bunch of low functionings who are going to end up in a group home someday or going to be living off SSI for the rest of their lives. The public tends to think of autism as lower functioning. And in case you don't know s**t about autism, challenges and cognitive abilities are very diverse.


Just think if they had the aspergers diagnosis, I woudn't have to tell people i'm autistic and they think i'm some f*****g idiot or they would look at me funny and say you're not autistic.



2. It messes up the statistic about unemployment and all the bull**** in between

You know I read an article once about how an autistic turning 18 is like driving off a cliff. Stfu a**hole. Way to ruin my self-esteem you prick! And I was with my parents once at an autism thing and I overheard him talking to my parents commenting on how oh it must be so hard to raise an autistic child. I wanted to walk up to him and say stfu fatass. But I didn't or he probably would have sat on me. LOL

Anyways, there are statistics out there which says that anywhere from 50 to 80% of those with ASD are unemployed, 90% of autistics never date, blah blah yada yada yada. Well guess what? It's all a bunch of f*****g BS! Since they are grouping everyone with autism into one group, the statistics include those who are low functioning who obviously arne't going to do much s**t in life anyways.

If they did a statistic on autism and employment for those with IQ's of 90 or higher, that number of those who have never had a job at say 25 would be no way near 50%

If I see another post about how most autistics never had a job, I will f*****g scream and probably wake up my damn neighbors in the process!



3. The public thinks of autism as a bunch of low-functionings

Duh no s**t! The majority of the public doesn't know s**t about autism.

Most people with Asperger's never have a job (those that do, tend to have menial ones), and close to zero marry.

If most people don't know what autism is just tell them you've got Asperger's because I doubt they'd know the diagnosis was removed.

Yes this, a large majority don't have a clue there's a spectrum and only know of Aspergers and "classic" autism because of a few movies and the news. What the DSM says doesn't really matter, Aspergers still exists, it's just called ASD level one now, same difference call it whatever you want.

Arizona still uses the DSM-IV criteria to be approved for services. Many practices here still use the DSM-IV. I too feel that they should not have lumped asperger's in with autism (maybe not for the exact reasons you specify though lol). Some say it was done so that those with asperger's can receive services, but if the state decides to still use the old manual criteria.. then that defeats that purpose. I still use the term "asperger's" as do most in my circle.

under trhe DSM IV I would have a diagnosis right now of Asperger's, now I may never get one due to a lack of info as to the difficulties I may or may not have since I need someone who knows me well to answer some questions. Unfortunately that person doesnt exist because nobody knows me well.

So yeah I wish it still existed

It was grouped in because the distinction between high functioning autism and Asperger's syndrome wasn't enough to warrant it being a separate disorder. Tony Attwood has a page on it:

So since high functioning autism and Asperger's are the same, Asperger's is now called autism. If you want to make the distinction from those "hand flapping ret*ds" ( I'm holding back here) then you can say high functioning/level 1 autism or just say Asperger's.

When describing myself to others, I do use the term 'autism', not just because Asperger's no longer exists in the DSM, but also because people are far more likely to understand at least a little about what autism is, whereas they may never have heard of Asperger's, which gives them no context by which to understand me.

OP, as you'd said it yourself, this thread might offend some people since belittling a portion of the forum's members is against the rules.
