I saw some comments on another thread about going to the cinema alone, and I was wondering if you find going to the movies to be relaxing or stressful. I don't mind watching a movie, but I don't go the the cinema anymore because I have an airborne allergy to corn (popcorn). However, even when we used to go my husband got in the habit of bringing his earplugs because he knew otherwise I would sit there the whole time with my fingers in my ears! These days I find the screen at home to be kind of bright (but I tolerate that better than the noise of the cinema), and I have noticed that certain types of movies make me quite anxious....I assume it is because I am so visual that there is sometimes a thin line between what is pretend and what is real (sometimes I get confused about what was in a dream versus what happened in real life).

No, I hate going. It's uncomfortable for me and to be honest it's not a natural environment for me to watch a movie.

I find it difficult enough to sit in someone elses house and watch a movie, let alone the cinema.

Plus, I find it really difficult to sit through a whole movie anyway and in the cinema it makes it even harder for me to take in the plot. There's so much going on and it just doesn't work for me.

The theaters around here have always been fairly low-key, so I enjoy it. It's like a mini-event surrounding a brand new movie. I don't have any allergies, which helps.

I like going to the cinema. But I wouldn't want to go on my own.

But the only thing is, if watching a family film, is the kids in the cinema. I don't mind them if they are not seated next to Or behind me. To get into a film I need to be relaxed, not agitated because of some 5-year-old sitting next to me shuffling and fidgeting, or sitting behind me swinging their legs and kicking my seat. It's more annoying when kids keep moving seats. I never went to the cinema when I was really little. And even if I did, my mum would have made me sit in one seat and be quiet. Not be distracting for the people sitting near who are trying to enjoy the movie.

That is the one good thing about seeing movies that are rated at least a 12. There are no small kids.

I like movies, but I can't understand why the sound is so deafeningly high in cinemas. I've never been by myself though.

No. Why waste your money, watch a movie that is WAY too loud, eat crummy popcorn, and sit near people who are disrespectful, who won't shut their mouths, keep kicking the seats (kids...), fart, burp, play on their phones when they are not supposed to, etc.
I just watch movies at home. HBO always has a new movie on Saturday nights. Last night it was "Taken 3" with Liam Neeson. Not to mention I have a huge DVD/VHS collection as well, several hundred movies ready to play at any time. And I've always got RedBox as well, for $1.20 (or whatever they are nowadays). So a cinema is not in my future.

No. I saw a movie in the theater in the summer of 1991, and then I saw one in 2002. Not since.

I don't like the noise. Too loud and no privacy, no pause button, etc.

I liked them when I was between about 12 and 17 but who can blame me? the 80s had great movies for people that age (Stand By Me, Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller, etc). 8)

I enjoy going to the movies once in the while, but most of the time I prefer to stay home and watch something on TV. If there's a movie I want to see so much that I don't want to wait for it to be released, then I'll go watch it. That's actually pretty rare because I'm just not much of a movie watcher, even when I'm at home. I prefer TV shows because they're not as long. I've gone to three movies this year, two I wanted to see and one my mom wanted me to watch with her. I have also gone to a few midnight premieres over the years, and they were all a lot of fun even though the theaters were very crowded and people had to sit right next to you.

I always bring earplugs with me when I go to the movie because the volume is too loud most of the time. There are two movie theaters in my town, and one has got a program where they will upgrade any food you buy to the next size, so if you order a small popcorn, you will get a medium, etc. Most people like that, but I hate it because when I tell them not to upgrade mine, they do it anyway nine times out of ten. I know it's more food for the money, but it's a lot more calories, too, and I tend to eat mindlessly if I'm distracted. The other local theater has better food prices, lower volume in general and more comfortable seats, so I prefer going to that one even though everyone else in my family likes the louder place better.

Oh I forgot, I also prefer watching movies at home because we can turn on the closed captioning. I have a hard time catching everything that is being said in a movie....maybe because of all the background noise in movies?!?

I don't enjoy going to the movies.
1) There are too many people
2) They are too damn noisy, feel like it's the right time to talk
3) It can't stand the blend of smells, based on people's food and body odor
4) I hate it when someone I don't know sits next to me, even though there are plenty free seats

I haven't been in a movie theater for years. The last time I had to was for school with my classmates.

I haven't been to the movies in 10 years. The last time I went a group of high school students sat in the very last row. They thought they'd be cute by throwing popcorn at total strangers. There were five of them, three guys and two women. Since I'm an aspie high school teacher, I decided to confront them ... sort of.

I moved to the back row and sat next to them.

They looked at me. I looked at them. I didn't say a word. They stopped throwing popcorn and we watched the rest of the movie in silence.

In retrospect I suppose I should have called an usher to boot their collective butts out of the theater ... but at the time I was incredibly annoyed with their blatant rudeness.

The problem with movie theaters is that you never know who will be around you. Some people feel that it's necessary to critique every scene in the movie. Others use their cellphones even though they're not supposed to. Some couples engage in unseemly displays of public affection.

If I wait for a year or so, the movie will be out on DVD or I can watch it on Hulu or NetFlix.

I'd rather watch movies from the comfort of my home.

...I grew up (??? :P ) before mall theaters , multiplexes , they weren't where I was (Westchester County , New York ~ considered the suburbs of New York City , but not the city itself) ~ theaters were still , in Westcheter , tradition " nabes " , pretty small in total seats , I guess ~ But I think , ironically (??? :? ) , the total number of seats in each single theater woud still be considerably larger than most mall theaters' individual " screens " to-day - tho' they weren't considered " big " theaters , they were " neighborhood " theaters .
Sometimes as a kid , I'd see " special " movies in NYC proper , Manhattan , at Radio City Music Hall or simillar , w/parent-s - One I saw elsewhere was that Rex Harrison movie of Doctor Doolittle that is widely considered a really awful example of 60s movie musicals (I sorta like it  :!: ) !

Do you mean frame rate? I can second that, 24 frames per second gives me motion sickness.

I like movies, but at the cinema it is ridiculously loud. The movie is not too bad, but the commercials and pre-show are way too loud. I plug my ears.

I'm not too keen on popcorn. I just drink liquids and occasionally get a snack.

I love going to the movies. I last went to see Everest and was excited for days/weeks ahead of actually going.

And the food at my local theatres is very good, I can even order things like pizza, nachos, burgers and fries.

My hearing isn't sensitive at all (if anything I'm closer to being deaf) so if it's loud, I don't notice.

But I won't watch horror or thriller movies at all because they scare me and I get nightmares very easily from things I've read, watched or dealt with in real life. Sometimes even a commercial for a horror movie can turn into a nightmare.

My next movie will be next weekend. The local brand of theatres is putting on a charity day with about 4 older movies that are child/family friendly, one being Despicable Me 2. I think the Minions are SO cute :D . It's free to get in and popcorn, drinks and snacks are $2.
