I am doing a novice congressional debate tommorow and I am really anxious. This is my first one ever, and I have been practicing speeches and they all end at like 2 minutes and 20 seconds and the optimal time is three miinutes. Also I am iffy on the ques and such.

So how do I manage this anxiety? What is your advice on how to manage anticipation anxiety? And during it as well.

That's actually not a big spread to stretch it out to.

Just slow your pace. Do your best William Shatner with the pregnant pauses.

Good luck. :)

I did the exact same thing my junior year of high school, I joined the forensics (speech, debate and performance) team, and my very first event was congress. I was pretty terrified too, but it actually went really well. Just tell yourself that your performance isn't a big deal, and that no matter how you do, you'll have done well just by trying it. You can also remind yourself that three minutes is a miniscule timeframe in the big scheme of things. One thing that helps me with anxiety is mindfulness. I mentally take myself to a safe and calming place, and stay there until I feel better. Good luck, I hope everything goes well!

All the best, brandonb1312 8) Being nervous is normal....just imagine that you're presenting to us. I actually lecture now. I've found that I'm far better at lecturing (essentially monologue) as my shyness evaporates.

Look at the bright side. At the very least you will not have to worry about social interactions. It is just like LabPet said. It really can play into your strengths.
