You heard it here first.

My friend is autistic.

Please present your theories as to why autism is good.

Autism is good because every person matters.
Autism is good because it isn't bad.
Autism is good because if autistic people were never born it wouldn't be a wonderful life.

Give one reason with solid scientific evidence.

This doesn't mean anything. You could say Down Syndrome is a blessing in disguise with that logic.

Give one reason with solid scientific evidence.

Biodiversity is good.

There is no evidence in this statement.

There is no evidence in this statement.

I will argue that the evidence is evident.
If it weren't for biodiversity we would all be one celled organisms swimming around in primordial muck.
Just because some people have biological advantage in a population, does not mean diverse people do not contribute any good to that population.
The fact that it is an inherited condition which continues to be passed on is evidence that it is a contributing factor in the success of our species.

Not evidence exactly, but a peer reviewed article from a respected institution and published in a reputable journal.

Less academic review of said paper here: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/20 ... 122849.htm

Or in short: genetic diversity is good. The more genetic diversity there is, the more likely a population will be able to cope with environmental change by natural selection. In addition, in social species, behavioural diversity within a group leads to more different approaches to problems, and therefore being more likely to find a solution.

What's the point of these jeremiad threads? What's the point of trying to spread despair and hopelessness? What good ever comes of that? Isn't there enough oppression of autistic people already, in the general planet, without trying to maximise it here too?

A person whose autism is 100 percent bad or 100 percent good is pretty rare if they exist at all. People saying these things only cause harm. The disagreement at WP is between those that think the bad outweighs the good by so much that pointing out the good parts is harmful and those that think there is enough good parts that pointing them out is helpful.

Each one of us in our own way can choose to make this a hopeful or hopeless place.
