Does anyone have a recommendation for a clinic in the north texas (DFW area) that will evaluate an adult? I'm willing to drive a good distance, so it doesn't have to be in a specific town or anything. Google isn't turning up much, most websites that mention autism or aspergers specifically mention children. There is one website for a neuropsychological clinic that looked promising but further googling showed that the doctor specialized in pediatric evaluation. It didn't say that they wouldn't do adult evaluations though.

I know any testing will be expensive no matter where I go, but I don't think my coping mechanisms work as well as an "adult," especially when it comes to communication in my first "grown up" jobs. After tons of research and reading Attwood's complete guide (which I thought would convince me I was wrong, but instead is now extensively highlighted and underlined for all the portions that match my behavior now and as a child) I think an actual diagnosis would be helpful in some ways. Or at least provide me with some peace of mind.

Let me explain: I am not diagnosed nor am I "self-diagnosed," all I know are what my life experiences have been up to this point and a lot of it makes more sense when considered through the lens of autism and sensory processing issues.

Call those pediatric places.

The one place that diagnosed my husband was only listed in the pediatric section. I called and asked if they knew anyone who would do adults. They did adult testing! They don't advertise it, since insurance usually doesn't cover it and "there isn't a big demand for adult testing."

Also be careful. Some places around me who did say adult ASD testing, it was only an interview, not the actual scored test. You don't want that.

Hello, my PCP referred me to a place called Gearing Up in Plano. I just went a few days ago for what they call an "intake" appointment. It was basically two 45 minute sessions, one of which was just filling out a personality test and the other was an actually 45 minute session with the psychiatrist. I go back this week for my full psychological evaluation for Asperger's. Going through something similar as you and would also just feel better with an actual diagnosis. Hope this helps you. Thanks!

Will you post again with how that goes for you? Definitely interested to read about it. Or if you're willing to, you could PM me.

Phone calls are the hardest for me, it takes me time and writing out a script before I typically manage to dial the phone. So actually calling clinics is not completely out of the question but it will take me time.

Yes, I can definitely let you know how it goes.

I used to have to rehearse also before phone conversations. I've gotten a lot better with that over the years. I was a little nervous about calling Gearing Up, but I have to say they were very nice over the phone which made the conversation much easier for me. Now, I'm wondering if they train their staff this way. I don't know if knowing that will ease your mind a little and help you prepare for that phone call.

It may be awhile before I can post or message with any information on the evaluation. I'm also having another ADHD evaluation done through them a week after the psychological evaluation. Then, a week after that is when I meet with the psychologist to review the evaluation report. I will be in touch!
