This is why you need to think hard before outing yourself as autistic. Especially towards people middle age and older.

I should expand upon my comment about middle age and older. Of course there are understanding baby boomers and people under 30 with the attitudes expressed to the OP. But when we baby boomers were growing up there was a dominant way of thinking expressed in this video

Thanks for sharing, conundrum.

Reminds me a lot of my own outing process a couple of years ago (and, sadly, some aspects of it continue).

I see at the bottom that The Mighty is open for similar submissions. I just might have to contribute my own stuff.
