It really bothers me when people say colour doesn't matter. Black isn't just the colour of my skin, it is a lot more complicated than that.
I like posting with everybody, but I send up a little cheer inside my heart when I find another dyke Aspie is posting, especially a butch. I think we're all glad whenever we come across someone we don't have to explain certain things to, which is why we like Wrong Planet. Besides, sometimes recognition of a commonality is just fun. It's like when I discover someone out in the world who's on the spectrum. Maybe others might not understand why that matters, especially if we're both able to pass.
On the other hand, who wants to be steered towards someone just because they assume that the commonality will make the two of you great friends? For example, what if one of my stims really annoyed you in person, and my special interests bored you to tears? So, why should somebody else think you and I ought to suddenly spend lots of time together and be great friends?
But, yes, we're all more than the surface level things that identify us, whether it's because our category is much more deep and rich than what immediately shows or because we're more than just our categories. So, yes, all this really does matter.
We're all typing here, so I would think it reasonable to guess there are more black, female Aspies around here than anyone is aware of. Who can tell if it isn't specifically mentioned? Now that the subject has its own thread, anyone looking for more can find those who post about it here. So, I think creating it was a good move. It's like a little beacon.
