what we have here is a growing community of incredibly talented and creative people. it is large enough, that we should have enough people with similar and relating interests that we are able to work together to start some major projects. major projects that should be powerful enough to appeal to mainstream society's interests while raising awareness of the autism spectrum.

this idea comes from multiple viewpoints. jsut the thought of how interesting are the great things that we do individually makes me think of what greater things we can do if we work together. these things can be so great that they have to potential to be recognized worldwide. to display the value of the autistic mind configuration should be a way to raise overall acceptance of every individual gifted with autism. the majority of the problems that we have seem to be dealing with society and social acceptance. once we can become socially acceptable as a valuable part of society, we should be able to continue to flourish and grow stronger as a people.

this is something that i'm very serious about and if this doesn't get much response, i will not give up. i need everybody's help though. please post your opinions on this, also ways that you would be able to contribute (no matter how minute or limited you think your talent may be) and any ideas for projects that the thought of this might inspire.

thank you everybody-please help to pave a better future for our kind

I think this is viable. I am grateful for what I have been given (being autistic) but I am admittedly often unrelateable. I wrote recently an essay about Theory of Mind with respect to the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle. But, I do not know what project (?) is recognizable &/or appealing to NTs. I am not good at this. I am math/science/art oriented. Maybe others would know......

NTs are interested in all forms of art, music, movies, tv, major gatherings~

we can't limit ourselves- once we start limiting ourselves, we automatically submit to self defeat.
we shouldn't stop at just one thing, we should try as much as we can until we get it right.

ways that i can contribute- i work with ideas i can help people find ways that their talents could be useful or expand upon ideas for new projects.

and overall i'm willing to do whatever neccessary to help on any aspect of anything

Starting a virtual company would be a good idea.

1) Lots of people to give online support for the companies products.

2) Maybe even alot who would not mind doing it on the phone.

3) People to develop the companies website.

4) People to produce the product (we will assume it to be IT/media at this point

5) People who know bussiness and law to keep paper work in order.

WOW, what a concept! YEP! But I think the MAIN problem with the whole TOM is that they don't even TRY, much less have the ability, to observe it objectively. It would be like me trying to discern EXACTLY how you felt about something! If my favorite color is blue, and yours is brown, are our tastes REALLY different? Could we merely be perceiving DIFFERENT colors in the same way, where our MINDS actually enjoy the same color?

YIKES!! !! Did I actually think of you as another person with a mind and thoughts? How does that relate to TOM?

Of course, I assume that you are merely talking about the fact that trying to observe a person in a set environment, or with their knowledge, could change the outcome and make the whole experiment worthless.

Don't sell yourself short though! In some ways I am only on the periphery of what you deal with, and how you think, but I think we can relate just fine. At least you know that most won't know about the heisenberg uncertainty principle, even though I don't know how ANY star trek fan or SG1 fan couldn't! ST talks about "Heisenberg compensators", and SG1 actually described it a few times.

BTW RE Shaynes idea. It is OK, I'm game. My talents are eclectic, so it depends what you want to do.

I agree; I think we should start a study on how to help us.

Howeve, what would we prove? What could we collectively provide?

Here's a thought. There are many groups that control legislation becuase they are formed. AARP is one influential group. I think there are two area we can influence:

I think a main one we can influence with a study on the spectrum level.
Another is ensuring employablility with this PDD; I just read a thread on a teacher wanting to know if htey should tell their supervisor about her disability. If she decides to do this, I would want her to feel safe that she can't be removed for that reason (or even not promoted)

If we can prove that most of the 1:150 are high functioning, and that most are VERY able of handling everything, the major groups would lose support BIG TIME! If we could further prove that mentally the average AS person is BETTER in most respects than the average NT, the idea of a cure could VANISH! The idea of gattica comes to mind! TWO brothers! ONE was a "genetic defective" called an "INVALID"! The OTHER was "genetically superior"! WHO was considered GARBAGE!? The invalid! WHO was considered dumber? The INVALID! WHO was considered physically inferior? The INVALID! WHO had the bad heart? The INFERIOR! *****BUT*****...

WHO BY HIMSELF saved his brothers life after his BROTHER lost a fair swim race?
WHO OUTSMARTED his brother and all the gadgets he relied on?
WHO took the more mentally challenging job?
WHO was the only one of them to TRY to beat all the "superiors" against all odds, after all, THEY studied for it!?
WHO was one of the few to WIN that challenge?
WHO handled the subterfuge to achieve all this?

ONE ANSWER! The INVALID!

I guess AS people have a lot in common with that invalid!

Steve

I agree it's a great idea.

However, speaking for myself, I can get quite excited about something like that, but know from experience that I tend to vanish in the middle of things and so couldn't trust myself to be dependable.

Shayne, if you pair me with an artist and get me some good ideas when I'm dry for them.... wait that won't work. My sense of humor is bizarre and nonsensical, riddled with references no one gets XD. No Comic for me :P.

I dunno what my strenghts and weaknesses and interests are.

Well... maybe for Concepts and storys.. thats about it.

OMG!! That's an excellent idea!! I would be more than willing to be involved in projects of this nature. I am a talented writer and researcher and very objective and passionate about the projects I become involved in. It would great to be able to research and put together some books, lectures, or research papers highlighting all the positives and differing perspectives of those with AS based on those that truly know - us. I already have a growing list of books topics and could definately add this one!

I am interested!! !

I could help by doing research and editing. I don't think of myself as having any special talents.

Ive had ideas and thoughts like this most of my life but was always alone in the way I think about the world and because of this I would call these ideas "dreams" even though deep down I know they are totally achievable but never by me alone. To me having dreams seemed normal, everyone has them but few have ever made their dreams come true because they havent got the talent required.

Now over the last few weeks I learn of Aspergers and after speaking to some Aspies I realise that there is people like me. Knowing this changes everything and makes me think that maybe they have dreams like me. This topic is proof that some of you do!! So what do we do now?? Are they still just dreams or ambitious ideas that we can achieve together?

I think that what is suggested in this topic probably isnt even as crazy as my own so would be VERY possible to make reality. I will give my support to help out with whatever I can. I can imagine people will be afraid to take part in this even though we have nothing to lose but could benefit a lot if there was even small success.
