Bob and Suzanne Wright founded Autism Speaks in 2005 because of their grandson.
Listen to Bob and Suzanne Wright as they explain the symptoms of a child with Childhood Disintegrative Disorder. So why was she taking her grandson to Autism doctors when they didn’t even know what it was that their grandson had and couldn’t do anything about, thus the dawning of Autism Speaks ?

Childhood disintegrative disorder is also known as Heller's syndrome. It's a very rare condition in which children develop normally until at least two years of age, but then demonstrate a severe loss of social, communication and other skills.

Back in 2005 the DSM-5 (5th Edition) didn’t exist until 2013.
Before the DSM-5 these disorders had their own diagnoses: Classic Autism, Aspergers, Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified, Rett Syndrome and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder with their own distinctive traits/symptoms.

DSM-5 lists Classic Autism, Aspergers, and PDD-NOS under the Autism Spectrum Criteria. But if one reads page 51, Rett Syndrome and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder is not an Autism Spectrum Disorder but a Social Communications Disorder.

What the DSM-5 says
“Individuals with a well-established DSM-IV diagnosis of autistic disorder, Aspergers disorder, or pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified should be given the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder.” BUT, “Individuals who have marked deficits in social communication, but whose symptoms do not otherwise meet criteria for autism spectrum disorder should be evaluated for social (pragmatic) communications disorder/"

At the time Autism Speaks was founded, CDD was classified on the autism spectrum.

I don't think so. Each of these disorders had their own distinctive diagnosis in the DSM-4 until DSM-5 combined them into the Autism Spectrum Disorder which is a new phrase for the DSM-5 and Social (Pragmatic) Communication Disorder. But I'm open minded if you will show me proof from the DSM-4, where CDD was part of the Autism Spectrum Disorder which didn't exist as a Spectrum in the DSM-4. And don't you find it odd that Autism Experts wouldn't touch her grandson with a 10 foot pole because they didn't know what was wrong? Or did you even watch the video and read my articles?

So based on a four and a half miniute video you are rediagnosing him?

The other part of me is who cares? I am no shill for Autism Speaks, but I don't understand the outrage about the child's diagnosis changing, and that making a difference if the group is still valid.

If you have an axe to grind with A$, have at it. I don't see the need to drag a kid's diagnosis into the fray.

Listen, I can't stand A$. I do not give money to them, as they pimp little kids out so people empty their wallets. My husband was diagnosed at 50, and will never get any services for speech and lack of social skills. Reason being, since he "bucked it up buttercup" for 50 odd years, he supposedly has no problems.

If this was about a GoFundMe site, where the person said my kid has cancer or whatever, and it wasn't true, I'd be hot. That's running an scam.

The fact this kid now has something other than Autism, how does that change the group? The money A$ raises isn't personally benefiting the Wrights. It's not going into their personal bank account. And whatever that grandson has, he's still pretty disabled. It's not like he is a dynamic, social butterfly homecoming King and All American athlete. He was pretty low functioning from what vids and reports I have watched.

A$ and the Wrights have enough on their own for you to rage about, than to drag the kid into the mix. The diagnosis of the child or the reason the Wright's started the group doesn't add or subtract what A$/the Wrights are doing now.

I don't believe the diagnosis is a *ha ha got you!* moment in this circumstance.

It was listed as one of the five autism spectrum disorders. Which means it was considered part of the autism spectrum.

Anyway, even if he was misdiagnosed as autistic, it wouldn't invalidate Autism Speaks. It's what Autism Speaks is actually doing that should be judged, not whether the grandson of the founders 'counts' as autistic.

CDD is very rare and not really representative of autism in general.

Eh, they're not really very different from LFAs once they're done their regression. It wouldn't give you any insight into higher functioning individuals, but I doubt you could tell a CDD kid from an LFA kid without knowing their developmental history.

Apparently there's a trend here to pounce on anyone who challenges anything.
