I find haircuts very freaky. The only person ever to have cut my hair the usual way with scissors is still my Mum. She was a hairdresser by trade, so she does it the way I want very nicely - but mostly it's because I trust her enough to allow her to touch me. That's only twice a year at the most, between times it grows as it pleases. In my twenties, I used to let it grow very long - almost down to my bum sometimes.
I really couldn't have anyone I don't know that well be so physically close and touch me all over my head; especially not if they're standing where I can't see them. My sense of touch can be very sensitive, and I get reflexes like a jack-in-a-box when I'm anxious. I always worry that I might flinch just when the scissors are perfectly poised to take a ear off or something!
I have tried a buzzcut a few times, and can do a reasonable job of it by myself, but it seems to take an age afterwards before it feels right. People say it looks OK on me, though. Guess I'll have to get used to it - Mum's getting on a bit now, and too much hair is a PITA to look after. I've also seen a couple of pictures recently that show how big my bald spot is getting - not a good combination with long hair IMHO.
