Do you think geeks are all part of the same social group just because they're geeks? I don't really think they are. There is a mainstream geek culture. A lot of geeks are somewhat involved in it. That gives them stuff in common.
There's people like me who have no interest in mainstream geek culture, who could still be considered geeky. I could call myself a psychology geek, music geek or an optics geek. Do you think geeks who aren't involved in mainstream geek culture have anything in common with geeks who are?

I did some googling and I found this: http://www.themarysue.com/what-it-means-to-be-a-geek/

It says that all geeks are united by a detail oriented mind. I guess I am detail oriented about certain things. I still prefer to hang out with people who are less detail oriented than me. Those people introduce me to new concepts and energize me.

All geeks probably have a few commonalities--such as attention to detail pertaining to their special interests.

However, geeks come in all shapes and sizes.

Meh, I don't find much in common between the trendy geek who likes anime, RP and his smartphone and on the other side the old school nerd who likes facts, patterns and numbers and who was the opposite of cool 20 years ago. As someone from the second category, I think that these are two different communities.

Well I have a friend and we couldn't be any different but we get along because of geek stuff.

He sane, I am insane and he is anti drinking and drugs, I am freaking a junky. The only common interest we have computers and Linux. He is perplexing, I don't know why he has anything to do with me since I treated him like crap and smoked weed in his car once lol

I told him he is the last friend I'll have and I believe that because people don't interest me anymore.

The way I think of it, it goes like this:

Nerds are awkward people who are passionate about things they can make money from. Like maths or science.

Geeks are awkward people who are passionate about things that make money for other people. Like the Avengers.

I've always been more of a nerd.
