Naturally, after my diagnosis last year I did a lot of research. I think it has gradually become somewhat of a special interest. It's not a bad thing is it?

If it's screwing up your ability to hold a job or be independent in general, then it's bad.

If it's not doing either of these things, then it's not bad.

It's a heck of a lot better than having Medieval Plumbing as your Special Interest.

Try telling others you have an interest in BOTH vacuum cleaners and vintage washing machines and not get laughed at.

For those respective and sister site forums, if interested here are the links:

No it isn't screwing up anything, though I don't think it's helping my sleep and it's sometimes difficult to get on with my uni work. I think it's just a case of continuing to manage it so that I have time where I can focus on it and leave enough time to get my work done.

RichardJ - thanks but not for me :)

I think whenever someone is diagnosed with something they do a a lot of research on it. And I think someone with aspergers is more likely to really get into it.

It became an interest for me too, so much so that in order to try and understand the intricacies of autism better I took a job as a support worker for adults with learning disabilities and challenging behaviour...
Best thing I ever did....
NT co workers although lovely, do my head in a thousand times more than anything the guys I support do even though their behaviours can be extreme.
I truly feel privileged for every moment that they let me in to their little worlds...
:D :D :D

I was diagnosed with Asperger's when I was still very young and I am just recently getting into (rather obsessively) researching it. I didn't know very much about it before, and my new knowlage is already helping me out quite a bit. I now have explanations for more of my odd behaviors and just yesterday I was able to explain some of my behaviors to a friend better then I otherwise would have when he misinterpreted my autistic tendencies as me not giving a crap about what he was saying.

It's really helpful to know a lot about autism if you have it, especially considering how much misunderstanding there is about it. I don't know about you, but my research has also included looking up more stuff about how to be more social which will definitely come in handy. I'd definitely say that for me my obsession with autism has been positive because I am learning more about my condition and how to cope with it better.

No i dont think so, since it was pointed out to me by a few professionals and started looking into it, there were alot of WTF moments, in some ways it gave me ease that i wasn't alone nor going insane! lol... It has become a great interest to me also, and spend most days and nights researching many aspects, but mainly at the moment from the view of those on the spectrum, as i have noticed ideas about what it is like on the spectrum seems to often differ greatly from so called professional NT's that publish papers as factual when they couldn't be further from the truth!

Medieval plumbing and water distribution is actually pretty interesting! lol especially Roman era distribution/canals/waterways/viaducts etc!
