BTW people have attributed smearing poop on walls to autism but I hear normal toddlers do this to. My parents were lucky none of us kids went through it but my son sure did. I am curious about how it's attributed to autism. Is it about degree and how does it differ to autistic children doing it than normal children?
I think it's mainly linked to autism because of delayed toilet training. Only people who wear diapers smear poop, and some autistic people need diapers longer than normal, so the potential for poop smearing lasts for a longer period. Parents tend to complain about it because it's gross and unpleasant to clean, and it gets them pity points because the kid is too 'old' to be smearing poop.
I suppose it's possible there could be a sensory-seeking element to it, but I haven't seen any evidence that diaper-wearing autistics are any more likely to smear poop than diaper-wearing NTs.
As for liking bright colors, why couldn't that be related to autism? I had an obsession with purple when I was little. It wasn't just 'my favorite color' the way most people describe, it was basically anytime I had a choice between purple and non-purple objects I chose the purple one regardless of any other features. I assumed I had to like the taste of all purple foods better than any non-purple food, would write/draw in purple if given the chance, etc.
