Is it possible that Asperger or autism could cause physical weakness like not being able to stand long time and not being strong in physical work? Or it is compiltely some other problem not connected to the matter?

hypotonia your referring to, yes its possible that there can be a delay in musclar strength. i have mild forms of it. also fine motor coordination can accompany it

I feel physically weak a lot, I don't think it has anything to do with AS for me though. I get tired walking up stairs even though I'm not unfit.

This is interesting, I suffer from weakness and fatigue also , for which no medical cause has been found . I was unaware that Aspergers could cause such an issue. Thank you for this thread , it will be interesting to see if others have found the same .

Funny you ask that...I haven't seen any noticeable weakness, per se, but when I am drilling with my unit I am the only one who cannot stand at attention for long periods of time (I will be flexing my knees, etc but I still start to pass out). I have back troubles as well (lumbago) so I attributed it to this but my doc says that it wouldn't really cause that, so who knows.

I don't think we were born with weak bodies or anything, but we tend to get wrapped up in our thoughts and feelings a lot, and often forget we have any bodies at all. (At least I do that, and it's not good, because, as a consequence, my muscles don't get enough exercise, I don't eat right, etc.)

My mother has issues like that, however when she was younger she could be very very strong too.

I know some of my eye muscles are weak, it causes strabismus where my eyes float out and away from eachother (opposite of crossed eyes). I did not develop depth perception becuase of it, and I think it contributes to my being face blind. I have heard that ASD people have a higher incidence of this then the NT population because the brain does not send the right signals to their muscles. I would think the same could be true for any group of muscles?

Exactly, I think it's because aspies are not too interested in sports and physical stuff. But you could also be weak because of sensory overload. I think it's so exhausting (mentally), that it's likely to drain your physical energy too.

Thank you for you all for your opinions. I also never really heard this would be connected to Asperger or autism, but I have started to think and feel it anyway might be
connected and I think it would be really interesting to find out if there is many aspies with the same problem. I have been dancing almost all my life, but still I am too weak even to stand long time.(even muscles are normal I think) I have also some weak eye muscles, interesting to hear that also could be connected to being an aspie, I did not know. I also usually feel that, like I would not have a body at all.
True, it takes a lot of energy to consentrate into external life. Maybe that makes tired.
I have been all my life very tired.

I give here an other question.
If many of us feel like not having a body, so how do you feel then?
Like walking brain? or somekind of fairy or spiritual being? or how?

I have a lot of muscle, I'm relatively fit.
I don't really like too many sports but I like being fit.

Still I have weak moments, I think its when I get so involved in my own world I tend to forget the process of proper stature. Also I have a very low appetite and I have difficulties telling when I should eat or not because I never get hungry so that is probably a large factor in my bouts of weakness.

There's other factors with this too.

I used to be a very fast runner now I'm the slowest. I don't know what caused it. Puberty maybe or the other poeple just turned into fast runners when they hit puberty.

I also don't eat very much food either.

I remember when I was in social situations(not engaged in an area of interest)particularly when walking among people....I had a very strong sense that "I" was a spider being transported by a machine from point A to B.I thought that this was "depersonilzation disorder",but I am not sure.

On the other hand, when doing areas of interest...lifting weights, bike riding,yoga...I was very aware and in my body...seem to need a certain amount of pain to feel "here".

I was very physical most of my life, lots of very physical jobs. But,there are two things I have problems with....standing in one place for long(I feel like I am going to tip over) and sitting in a chair....very uncomfortable,I perfer to recline,(sit cross legged on the floor or lay on my stomach) or be moving. My muscles have gotten weaker from disuse as I have gotten older, hurts to have to hold in any position, but I still have alot of indurance and walk constantly at work.

I was a skinny "weakling" throughout my early childhood. I was bullied and picked on constantly. I got into wrestling my sophomore year in high school and gained a lot of muscle mass. I became a sort of bully bully and got in an incredible number of fights.

I'm 25 now and my weakness comes and goes. It's more like I don't have the proper sense of my own body. I got kicked out of the bowling alley the other day because I broke the pin return by bowling too hard. The game before that, I could barely get the ball down the lane.

I think the weakness comes hand in hand with the clumsiness.

For me also standing in one place is most difficult, I start to feel like a bit dizzy, it is easier to move and I also prefer to sit legs crossed and I like more being on the floor than chair.

NLD is often associated with weakness on the left side, which I have. My left grip is only in the 10th percentile (right is in the 60th). Dunno about AS, though. I've never heard anything about AS and weakness except as someone mentioned, maybe low tone in some people.
