This is what I wrote on a former work friends Facebook page (he has brain damage/dyspraxia)

"No one would have the sheer nerve to say this on Facebook on someones timeline except for me and I will for sure outrageous and anger a lot of you folk on here (especially his nearest and dearest) but please here me speak my wise words.
Looking through bens albums i see a lot of you friends of his, give ben a lot of nice comments and give him a rather outrageous number of likes on some of his photos. As nice as they are you are treating him as nothing more than a charity case or an object of pity. I know a lot of people with disabilities ranging from Down syndrome, dyspraxia, autism and physical disabilities. Instead of being treated like normal human beings people just feel sorry for them, without embracing there god given talents. That of course is the societal attitudes, of the ignorant masses in our so called 'fair society'
My message to you 'the masses' on here is think about your behaviour and attitudes, towards those who's behaviour you perceive to be outside the realms of the norm. You stand guilty of treating your fellow human as different in the eyes of the lord. May god will have mercy on your souls.

Was this a stupid thing to do on my part or not?

You don't know the intentions of the people who were "liking" the guy you mentioned.

I don't know if it was "evil"--but it was certainly the wrong thing to do.

I don't know if I would say it was necessarily evil, but I think it might be harsh. It's a bit much for people just liking and complimenting on facebook.

The day after I made the post (I made the comment on his Facebook page at night) I got a shower of messages to me on Facebook (by the guys friends) saying "you prick" and all kinds of abusive comments.

Yeah, I am not surprised at their responses. Can you remove your statement? I think that might be best. I understand where you are coming from and what you are trying to say and your intention, and even though your intention was good, it just wasn't the best way to go about it. Sounds like you may have hurt some of them without realizing it. I would remove the statement it that is possible. I would also say something to try to make amends. I know your intentions were good but others don't know that. It's important to say what your intentions were, I think.

Facebook is just a minefield. You're not evil for saying it .....just perhaps not the best venue.

☺ glad you came here.

Honestly don't know the real answer to your question. You being in the UK could involve different cultural norms.

Talk to your mates asap. Listen to what they have to say.

Personally, I think this was a terrible thing to do.

There's a huge chance that it would deeply hurt and upset the person whose page you posted on, who could receive a huge confidence knock from this and not trust people the same again, constantly second guessing and worrying that people aren't being genuine.

You also said it with no clue why his friends were interacting with him. You've basically just decided that because he has a disability, nobody can actually like him - that's absolutely disgraceful, in my opinion. There's every chance that you're the only one paying attention to his disability and treating him as different. It's your issue, not necessarily anyone else's.

This.

It's not your business if other people like his pictures. Some people on my facebook get more likes than others and it can be for any number of reasons.

How would you 'embrace his god given talents'? Presumably not by connecting with him by showing interest in the things he's interested in and instead believing he inspiration porn for 'talents'? There's not much difference between attitudes such as 'it's only pity' and 'if it wasn't for his disability then there's nothing likable about his posts'.

You owe your ex-coworker a serious apology. They're probably very upset.

The post I made was in August and because of my actions my Facebook account was disabled by the Facebook police. Although since then I have set up another Facebook account under a different email/name.

I wouldn't say it was evil, but I would call it sh***y and petty, and a good example of projecting. Your insecurity about your own "disability" and people not liking you is causing you to act like an ass to people who don't deserve it. Maybe you should talk to someone about that, like a therapist?

I would never presume to know the intentions of the people commenting and liking his pictures. Maybe they really like him. It was a mean thing to do. How do you think it made him feel?

That was 8 months ago. I am curious, wondering why it took you this long to ask about it.

You know what? I believe he did ask about it at the time he did it. I seem to remember a thread like that.

I have to agree with this. Why would you even feel the need to say something like that, Jamesy? What were you hoping to accomplish?
