A poster on another forum has said his mother is in the final stages of dementia . I feel for him, but showing that is very difficult . I just don't know what to say .

Sometimes you can express concern in a question.

(personal)
Are your family members giving you support?
Is there anyone with whom you can share your difficulties?
Are you able to keep up or will you need a break?

(logistical)
Is Medicare covering her expenses?
Does she need any help with transport?
Will she be needing any memory care?

I have a hard time with it as well but, I learned to show I care through listening and being there when they need it. I also try and help relieve some stress in other parts of their life as well. You could try that and see if it works, many times I don't have to say anything people just seem to know.

This is a major issue for me too. It seems that every time I try to express myself I end up saying something insensitive. So I have stoppwd trying. Of course I am labled as uncaring, but that is better than the guilt of saying something insensitive.
