When a man has a meltdown people think 'autism' and when a woman has a meltdown people think 'personality disorder'.

Why?

Since I have heard neither description for an adult meltdown I have no answer.

My ex did say in court documents (knowin of my dx but being the excellent and well balanced armchair psychologist) i was bi-polar schizophrenic with a lithium imbalance and multiple personalities....same paragraph also says I am possessed by a Babylonian sub-diety...lel)

Context please?
Hysterical meltdown? Stimming? Aggressive explosion from impatience/frustration? Crying? Shutdown? Literal classic out burst before tossing self to floor or running from the stimulation?

Because people are much harder on women.

In my experience when a woman is having a meltdown most guys think it is because "it is that time of the month".

Because autism has historically been seen as a male condition and personality disorders as female. The other issue is autism is seen as an issue children have, while personality disorders are seen as something adults have, and women on the autism spectrum seem to have more problem as adults than as children.

In a nutshell, the answer is gender bias. I think there is truth in your observation and that the difference is real.

Interesting point you raise. I would assume the gender bias lies in the stereotype of women being more "moody" or emotional. The disparity in diagnoses for autism would also be a contributing factor.

I'm wondering where the stereotype of autistic people being unemotional people came from, because autistic people tend to be the most moody and emotional people I know. :P

Actually, people don't tend to think 'autism' for adults of either gender - especially if they're high functioning and/or non-white.

A man having a meltdown will often be seen as violent, especially if he's black. A woman having a meltdown will often be seen as hysterical.

Many people seem to think once an autistic person turns 18, male or female, they disappear from the earth. They only care about the little children because they are "cute" and have their whole lives ahead of them.

It wasn't that long ago when people commonly thought homosexuality was a disease, that gay men were all pedophiles, and that only they could get AIDS, so I'm hoping the stigma about autism and Asperger's will change during my lifetime as well. But I'll probably be too old to care if that happens.
