I was diagnosed with selective mutism as a child and grew out of it about 6. Anyone else?

I didn't talk until age 5 1/2.

It has been speculated that I was "selectively mute" because I "didn't have anything to say."

That happens to me sometimes.

Yep. I was selectively mute with anyone who wasn't a family member or my one friend until I was 17 years of age. Even then, I learned to say the fewest words I could get away with and still answer someone.

Still, I learned to script what I was expected to say to others in my teen-age jobs.

Sometimes I get that way and I don't talk unless I have to. It's the worst when I'm tired.

I was classic autism nonverbal until I was 8 years old. Now at age 15 I am mostly selectively mute. Although that's compounded by speech problems due to dyspraxia.

Basically I can talk, but don't.

Never diagnosed, but definitely yes. I relate much to this:

I went mute shortly after I started school at age 6.
I have continued to be selectively mute in varying degrees to this day.

I was since the age of thirteen and throughout secondary school thanks to some idiot teenagers and my own concerns that I went off topic or would say something stupid.

I'm trying hard to get over it.

i wouldn't talk to anyone until I was three or four. Today, little of it remains but I can easily be rendered mute again by a psychologist. The feeling is terrible -- I can think, know that I am physically able to speak, but no matter what I do I can't force the words out.

Not quite, but I think I come close sometimes, as if I'm in a group or with someone I don't really know I usually prefer not to speak and rather just listen. I do find it a bit exhausting then to speak, like I need more energy for it than if I am in a relaxed setting.

I am often a selective mute at school, or even at home sometimes.

I have days when I gesture people instead of speaking.
