This amused me, though I surmise that some of the funny and creative minds here could write more entertaining obituaries. So tongue-in-cheek, here is mine:

Name: Asperger's Syndrome
Cause of death: euthanasia
Death certified by: DSM 5 committee
Location of burial: mass grave located within the autism spectrum
Next of Kin and Extended Family: Classic Autism, Other Autistic Disorder, BAP, PDD-NOS et al
Reason for approving euthanasia: political expedience
Age at Death: approximately 60 years old
Service: It was thought best that two separate services had to be held, one for the celebrants, one for the mourners, as they don't speak the same language.

Assurances were given that the patient was humanely and painlessly despatched. These assurances were, as they must be, taken at face value. It was not thought necessary to seek consent from the patient on the grounds that such a person was incapable of making any meaningful input concerning the decision, not being an qualified expert on the value, meaning and experience of her own life. A service of celebration is yet to be organised and Autism Speaks volunteered to cover all funeral expenses, on the condition that the headstone be inscribed with "All autism is an evil disease, autism is an epidemic and so autism must be eradicated from humanity". This generous offer was instantly accepted. The headstone was quickly vandalised by obviously disordered persons unknown and now the body lies in an unmarked grave where Autism Speaks plans to erect a public convenience...

2016 Update

Like the the loch ness monster numerous sightings of Aspergers are still bieng reported. This has been blamed on Autistic traits such as difficulty with change and repetitive behaviors. Worse yet there is no evidence Autism diagnosis are going down and even worse yet the idea that autism is not a horrific epidemic continues to have adherents. This Neurodiversity as it has been called has been blamed on elitist "Aspies" and people who think they are autistic but are not. A solution gaining populaity is based on the notion that the mercy killing of Aspergers mollycoddled the spoiled rude brats, that a public execution in Yankee Stadium of Neurodiversity by Jonathan Mitchell will put the dissenters in thier place which is a place that can not be seen nor heard and that people with autism will be universally feared and pitied once again.

The reports of Asperger's demise have been greatly exaggerated.

Why is it a bad thing to move all DXs to ASD as we now know it is one spectrum

Because there will still be people out there who will fall in between two labels because they wouldn't have enough of the social-communication deficits to fits the ASD criteria but yet they have the repetitive behaviors and fit enough in the ASD criteria. But to have SCD, there needs to have no repetitive behaviors. Also parents have been struggling with their kids because their DX would be changed to SCD and their kid would lose the same support system they had always gotten with their autism diagnoses. The SCD label doesn't give them the help to the degree they need it. That is what I had been hearing on here. I hope it isn't true because schools will label the kid with an ASD so they can get funds for the child to help them so I don't see why the medical label would matter. So I don't know what help these kids have been losing because wouldn't their schools use the ASD label for funding to give them the help they need? There is such thing as a academic label. It's not a real diagnoses.

I would think it would be easier to get services under ASD than Asperger's which is specifically omitted from a lot of services relating to autism. I mean, the whole system is collapsing so nothing is easier. I dunno, I've never seen any benefit to the Asperger's label, it's an ugly name and one a lot of people don't take very seriously for whatever reason.

Folks (like myself) who were in the old "aspergers" pigeon hole were not "in between" anything.

I am pretty sure that the OP was being facetious about "mourning" the label's "death".

But there are folks (often parents of the children with the condition) who really are "mouring" the end of the diagnostic label, and who really are upset about having their child lumped into the HFA hopper because the old "asperger's" label was an autism spectrum disorder that did not have the word "autism" in the name- so presumably it wouldnt have the stigma of autism attached to it. You might get the benifits of being on the ASD but escape some of the stigma.

Name: Asperger's
Date of Death: May 2013

Asperger's was commonly misunderstood by a lot of people. It was commonly mistaken as being socially awkward and having a hard time fitting in and making friends and having very strong hobbies or interests that were impacting their life. Some folks saw it as being social dyslexia, or a social disorder. Many people did not take it seriously. The criteria was too vague where even people who were introverted and very private and had strong interests could slip on it. Now the death of Asperger's will rest in peace from this suffering.

This was created as an irony thread, and APOM's contribution was exactly the kind I was hoping for. Thanks for making me smile and laugh APOM!

I agree! I don't like the Aspergers label, because my autism is milder than what is considered as AS, but I would be diagnosed as Aspergers anyway, and that's why I prefer the DSM-5 to previous manuals.
PS: I loved the obituary! I like that kind of sarcasm soooo much!!
